Plane diverted because of "Tefillin scare"
« on: January 21, 2010, 01:25:54 PM »
News article I just read;

Pennsylvania -A flight from New York's La Guardia Airport was diverted to Philadelphia after a bomb scare Thursday morning.
The commuter plane that normally seats 50 passengers is operated by Chautauqua Airlines and flies under the US. Airways name. The plane departed LaGuardia at 7:25 a.m. and landed in Philadelphia at about 9 a.m. surrounded by Homeland Security and Philadelphia Police Bomb Squad.

The passenger was removed from the plane without incident. There are no reported injuries.
VIN News has learned the scare was caused by an Orthodox Jewish 17 year old man who was praying with his Tefillin and was mistaken as a suspicious device.

Hey, I just get it, the guy is a genius.

He wanted a flight to Phili but it costed a bomb (!), so he just picked a flight (random and cheap) that will fly over Phili on its way, and get one of his friends to notify the authorities at the convenient time....

If hes lucky, he will even get damages for it, 1M US Airways miles, besides for the one he is getting for the promo.

Who is a lot of us? And there is no reason to put on tfillin on a plane it is just asking for problems.

And what exactly do you when flying JFK-NRT, etc?

I always try to avoid putting on tefilin on a plane (that's primarily why I make sure to have the ability to access any domestic club when flying) but it's not always possible.  In today's day and age though I'd be sure to tell an FA what I'm doing.

In a long haul flight you are right but he made it sound that even on a domestic flight it is normal,which like me and you do should be avoided.

maybe in a perfect world it should be avoided but especially on early morning flights you just dont always get the chance with all the check in and security. (besides the fact its much more uncomfortable to put on talis and tefillin in a packed departure gate or lounge if you cant find a quiet spot than to put it on in your seat on the plane.) i for one have donned my tefillin during the flight on numerous occasions without even the slightest problem and many people i know have done the same.

So wake up a half hour earlier or put on when you land.
