that's actually a pretty good idea. never thought about that. But did u have that much diversification in the menu to be able to have 3 different meals every evening? or u were asking for 3 identical meals per dinner?

for almost all of the Bahamas cruises, they get the food from florida. So, usually the first day or 2 (if you leave from new york or baltimore) is food that was ordered on the cruise before. So once they realize that you are eating ALL of their kosher food, they will order double or tripple the amount for the rest of ur cruise.

Yes, they had a nice variety most days.

One thing I am not sure about: What is the heter for being on a ship on shabbos, when they are doing Melochoh for you. Yes, the Yidden are minority, but since you have paid, you are included in any melocho which is being done for all passengers? Unlike when the melochoh is being done for the goy himself and you are just benefitting for it.

Someone told me the following, is it correct?

"That the average age of people on cruises is 50+"

"That getting on and off the ship involves waiting in long queues"

Youd imagine it would take time for 5,000 people to get off.

maybe, but maybe not everyone wants to go off immediately or they have 20 different places to go off the ship......

I'm not a halachic authority, but from the little I know, there are many issues with the above. One should check with a LOR (as I know you said you did)

just curious, was a rabbi consulted on whether you can have the crew swipe your card for you on shabbos?

IIRC, the idea of getting on 3 days before has to do with oneg shabbos, to get adjusted to the sea and not be sick on shabbos.

These days, when one can hardly feel the sea, would there be any leniency? (Has anyone ever asked?)

@aussie there is a 3 day rule according to some rishonim also in regard to putting oneself into a pikuach nefesh situation (getting a surgery on Wedensday that will cause chillul shabbos later).
I believe this is also the reason for the 3 day rule in ships.

Thanks for that.

Any leniency due to the safety of today's ships?

Whats the difference with you asking the front desk to open your room on shabbos in a hotel when it s an electronic lock and there is no manual key and u didnt keep the door open the whole shabbos?

False and false
1) the ship is so big, u will only see the 50+s at the sudoku competition or at the casino... Everywhere else it is full of honeymooners and looootss of singles. 20-30 years ago maybe those cruises were directed to older generations but with today s amenities, range of activities, I personally saw more people in their 30s to 40s...

2) IME there were 3-4 exits each time we were gettin off. The lines never shocked me and I am pretty bad at staying in queues without complaining... Not everyone is getting off at the same time. Sometimes the ship will dock at 6am and people have activities only at 8 or 9, so they dont wake up too early and still take some time for their breakfast. The only time i remember seeing some line was coming back onto the ship. If u get there 15 min before the deadline u will have some, but not that bad

i never said there was a difference. i think it would be in your best interests to ask a rabbi those 2 questions before your next cruise

I didn't mean Pikuach Nefesh on a ship.
I meant there is a rule from Wedensday and on one cannot place himself in a situation where he would be allowed to be mechallel shabbos on Shabbos. For example, an operation where he would later require chillul shabbos, one is supposed to do it before Wedensday.
I think the 3 day rule on a ship is the same.
