Feel free to update this table as needed.

If you want to get a tag but don't own a car, you can still sign up online. This is what the rep told me to do. Falsify info on your cars plates, make and model (for the plate# write the first two letters of your family name with the last 4 digits of your cell number, year: current year, make\model: choose any), and once you have an account just log in and remove that car from your profile.

For those who visit NY regularly, there are two cost advantages of getting an EZpass in NY (from NYSTA - thruway, or MTA) rather than NJ (PANYNJ): (1) to avoid the $1 monthly fee and (2) lower price on certain tolls - see red in chart above  The discounts you will lose out on for not having the NJ pass in NJ are minimal (a couple of cents on the NJTP during peak hours). Another third advantage (about being able to pay as you go rather than maintaining a balance) is below.

If you sign up and have the EZPass mailed to a NYC address and don't have any PANYNJ plans added when they mail it, you wont get a PANYNJ tag. (If you don't live there, ask a friend/relative who lives there to receive the tags for you, and use his address. Afterwards, you may change the address to your home address in NJ (or wherever), and add whichever plans you want. This was suggested to me by EZ Pass, and it works.)

Add the Port Authority Staten Island Bridges Plan (PASI), which makes bridges between Staten Island and NJ (Outerbridge, Bayonne, Goethals) 50% off the peak rate when crossing 3 or more times a month. There is nothing to lose as if you don't travel 3 times they simply adjust it to charge you the regular EZpass price. I believe it takes 24 hours from when you call for it to activate and its per 30 day period not monthly. You can add this plan on the website (in case the phone hours aren't convenient or you just plain don't like calling in general). Log in and choose "Plans" from the links on the left side of the page.

Another plus to having MTA issuing authority is that you can use PPT (pay per trip). Under this plan, you can keep a $0 balance in your EZ Pass account, and have tolls deducted from your bank account at the end of each day (by ACH). Downside is no miles for paying tolls, credit card is only a backup for when the ACH fails. (And if ACH fails even once you lose PPT plan and have to keep a debit balance in your account, so you can't have the miles & PPT :) )

Note that the the regular discounts for EZPass holders on the PANYNJ crossings now only apply to "New York" or "New Jersey" tags (as opposed to  EZPass in other states) per: https://www.panynj.gov/bridges-tunnels/en/tolls.html

To return an extra tag for NY MTA Authority:

Please return your tag(s) to:
P.O. Box 149001
Staten Island, NY 10314
along with a letter that states your Name, signature and E-ZPass account number.
For further assistance please contact (800) 333-8655 to speak with a Customer Service Representative.

@yelped @Realshlomo was that the reason you got the PANJNY version?
It may have been. It's been awhile I don't remember if I did it with a plan.

I think we need a new DP.

No. Was a while ago, but I remember seeing these instructions here and not adding anything until after I received it.

That was my experience - like 15 years ago..
Had advised many people over the years to do so and they all had success

You had it shipped to New Jersey.?

You'll need to make a new account and have it shipped to a New York address.
And don't add any plans on it until after you get it.

Yup. Will say on the tag mta.
And has a purple color to it Versus the panjny tag which is a blue greenish.
Sibling not long ago ordered a tag and selected a plan and got the $1 a month tag.
So the culprit seems to be adding a plan before getting the tag.
And obviously ordering it to a New York address.. Again it can be possible to get a regular tag even to a non-new York address but chances are much slimmer.

So I choose PPT when ordering a new tag?

You have to choose an option.

Is Monsey considered NY or does it need to be Brooklyn like Boro Park?

When creating a new account to get the mta tags, can I order more than 1 tag initially or only 1?

I don't seem to get Turnpike discounts with my MTA EZpass, but believe I used to get them when I had NJ EZpass. I'm happier saving the monthly fee because of not frequently taking the NJT.

Parkway tolls come up as $2.02 which seems to be discounted

Personally, I think the chase to avoid the $1 PANYNJ monthly fee on its E-ZPass tags is seriously misplaced in the overall scheme, even if you drive occasionally drive in and around MTA-operated facilities.

Given that a PANYNJ tag is a "New York" one, the toll savings on MTA bridges and tunnels compared to a non-New York one is more than enough to balance it out. Looking at:

https://new.mta.info/fares-and-tolls/bridges-and-tunnels/tolls-by-vehicle/cars

it's currently a couple of round-trips yearly, comparing the E-ZPass and Tolls By Mail rates (which are paid by non-NY E-ZPass holders). As an example, the Henry Hudson differential is astounding in percentages.

The same 3-tier rate structure currently applies to the NYS Thruway as well, but rate changes are in store:

https://www.thruway.ny.gov/news/adjustment/index.html

If these proposals are adopted, the non-New York E-ZPass and Tolls By Mail rates are going to be aligned starting in 2024 and raised significantly to 75% more than those for a vehicle with a "New York" E-ZPass. A single round-trip on the Tappan Zee Mario Cuomo Bridge with a full-rate New York E-ZPass will save $11.62, which is certainly an incentive.

When ordering a 2nd ezpass to use for a 2nd car,  do you know if you have to also pay the $1 monthly on the 2nd tag as well, or the $1 fee is per account, not tag?

does anyone know how to change the ez pass "replenishment amount" for a nj account?
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.
