Best PC laptop (non deal)
« on: May 10, 2012, 08:17:55 PM »
Not looking for a deal.
Casually looking for a PC, similar to Mac Air.

Thinkpad X1 looks good, but would prefer a larger screen. Looking for as much Battery life, RAM, weight, & durability money can buy.
Budget is not unlimited, but definitely looking to spend over $1000.

TIA

Mac Air is a Ultrabook, they arent too powerful, I dont think what you are looking for is comparable to a Mac Air.

What size screen are you looking for? 14"?

Can I have it for $798? :P
The XPS 14z might be a good deal for you.

Off the bat this is what I recommend.

If you could be a little more specific in what your needs of the PC is for...

Portable is more important than raw power. Just a high end pc.

Did you look into the XPS 14z?

Do you want an optical drive?

I am. I am totally not tech savvy.... so thanks a lot for helping.
I don't need an optical drive. Cellular would be nice, but not necessary.
would love a 17" ultra book, but FWIU they don't come bigger than 13"

How about the Sony VAIO  S    series?
no bigger than a 15.5 screen

Battery life seems terrible.

As I said Ultra books aren't powerful. Their processors are all the mobile version, for example - the i5 is 1.6GHz as apposing to a laptop i5 that's 2.5GHz
Also you are more likely to find an ultra book with 4GB of ram as apposed to 8GB

The battery life on an Ultrabook wont be as long as Laptop, as they are much thinner and dont have as big of a better.

How about the Sony VAIO  S    series?
no bigger than a 15.5 screen
Is a nice laptop, Its not that thin, but its a pretty sleek build.

But I personally dont think a 15.6" laptop is portable.

Seems like you still are in luv with yours :)

Its $1,579.88 on Amazon

I would say this would be a really good option for PlatinumGuy, but he is looking for a little bigger.

Also the specs are older, its the first gen sandy bride i5, the newer ivy bridge is already out ...

I forgot to mention earlier - a plus about ultrabooks over laptops is that they typical ultra-book has a SSD drive

You got it. Mac Air is pretty good with that though, don't think the processor is a problem, but I can use more RAM (thing does freak out at 12+ tabs sometimes)

I'm very impatient, so start-up time is important too.

I always have 10+ tabs open, Usually at least 2 browser and at least 1-2 Documents.
I have 8Gb of ram and it works fine. (I used to have 4Gb and upgraded)

Ultrabooks are gonna be harder to upgrade the ram if possible, Laptops are easy to upgrade.

SSD drives is what will give you the quick boot time.

If you are leaning more towards an Ultrabook Dell came out recently with the XPS 13. I dont know if you could upgrade the ram, and the most offered is 4GB.

Its a nice Ultrabook, but has basically no features other than a keyboard and screen :)

I looked, but didn't seem like much. 13" is pretty small. I wonder why none of them make big laptops, there's a large market of people who don't care at all about the price & need better computers. Hopefully Apple will come out with a 15" Air (as rumored).
OT but I heard today Apple is about to lower the price of the 10" Air to $700? Anyone heard the same?

Something to keep in mind - is that the screen resolution makes a big difference.

The typical screen res is 768p (its 1380x768) No matter how many inch screen the laptop screen size is, if the res is 768p it will be able to display the same amount as a 15.6" laptop.

Apples Mac Air 13" is a 900p

If you could find a 14" laptop with 900p it will prob be equivalent to 15.6" (the res is actually higher than the typical 15.6") so you will gain the fact that its smaller and more portable, and even though its a smaller screen you aren't really sacrificing anything.

OK, thx. This is a long term operation, so please post back if something good comes up.

Vaio Z1
Thanks.
The 13" Zaio, Custom made with:
Intel® Core™ i7-2640M processor (2.80GHz / 3.50GHz with Turbo Boost)
Windows® 7 Ultimate 64-bit
128GB SSD
8GB (4GB x2 fixed onboard) DDR3-SDRAM-1333
Verizon Wireless, AT&T, and Sprint 3G wireless mobile broadband built-in
Internal (4000mAh) + sheet (4400mAh) lithium polymer batteries
Comes to a whopping $2500.

Not entirely ruling it out, but seems like a heck of a lot of money.

I think I can pass on the processor, so -$150, perhaps also with Windows Home Premium (Don't even know the difference yet, use mac now) -$150.

I just can't see how this is worth $1000 more than a mac air.

This is actually a really powerful PC in the body of an Ultrabook

The specs are really nice, and not the mobile processor version.
Has dedicated 1GB Graphics - this is built for gaming, or real work - photoshop ect...

They prob are charging this price cuz they could, these specs on an Ultrabook aint common.

It will be way more powerful than an mac Air (not that you need it ;))
