Verizon termintating unlimited data plans
« on: May 16, 2012, 02:36:45 PM »
I just heard from Verizon that they will ending my grandfathered Unlimited data plan this summer. This was the whole reason I signed with Verizon a year ago. Just googled it and looks legit http://androidforums.com/verizon/549926-verizon-ending-unlimited-data-grandfathered-users.html

Upgrade from 3g to 4g or even 4g to 4g?

according to Engadget, from 3g to 4g, and if you have 4g then at your next upgrade

Will this allow VZW customers to get out of contract free? If yes, it might be worth signing up for a few months, getting a free device, then cancelling due to the material change in the contract.

Locking you into your device, that's VZW stealing a page from (bast@rdly) Sprint's book.

If you sign up now you wont have the grandfathered in unlimited plan anyway so I doubt you will be able to get out of your contract.

Good point, what was I thinking now.

But maybe renewing a 2-yr, that might be a good idea...

This is so sad  :'(
Was so much looking forward for the iPhone 5 4G LTE with my grandfathered unlimited data (i currently have on my VZW iPhone 4S)

Any loopholes around this (when getting the iPhone 5)?

Here are the comments from Verizon Wireless CFO  Fran Shammo regarding the company’s future LTE plans:

When asked how Verizon will drive customers to this new data share plan, Shammo said that LTE will be the anchor for the new plan and that as customers upgrade from 3G to LTE, they will have to be on a data share plan, allowing the company to sunset its unlimited 3G data plan. “A lot of our 3G base is on unlimited,” Shammo said. “When they migrate off 3G they will have to go to data share. That is beneficial to us.”
(it surely is.. But it ain't beneficial to the customers  :'( ....)

Why not pageplus (if you use less than 500mb)? Simple Mobile?

At least they are letting you keep the plan and you could buy the phone outright and actually use it on your plan.. Unlike Sprint that won't activate the better phones on the older plans....

I am sure I will be checking them all out, by mentioning those other 2 I was just sayin. Currently my phone is 4g but i have 2 others that are 3g not smartphones and my daughter is around the corner from asking for a phone or actually getting me to get her one :) then the other 2 lines will probably be getting upgraded to smartphones. So coming soon will probably be 4 smartphones in the family so a pretty chunk of change every month.
I am sure sharing the Data on a shared plan with 2 kids will not work out as well as VZW says it will.

@sky121,
Are u suggesting that if I buy the iPhone 5 somewhere else (not by upgrading) full price, I'll be able to take advantage of unlimited 4G LTE (if I'm currently grandfathered in the 3G unlimited)?

No but you should be ok with at least 3G. If you bought a 4G phone before the effects take place would Verizon make you change your plan?

I think it's best to stay put for now. Wait and see where VZW is changing you to and decide then.

It sounds like they won't change your plan, but if you switch devices you'll lose your plan.
