Have a 3:15 layover next week. Is that time at all to leave the airport? Not specifically looking to do something, rather to pass the time. Maybe get some Lepperts?

What time? During rush hour you will not want to go in to Waikiki on such a short layover.  Like driving in NYC on that stretch.

Not so desperate for food (I don't eat Lepperts anyways, although my companion does). Just trying to see if I can go do anything in town.

Apparently this happened a year ago, but the Holiday Inn resort in Waikiki left the IHG brand. I stayed here with my CC free night a few years ago and it was pretty good. Shame that IHG is basically now unrepresented in HI, except for a HI Express in downtown HNL.

.

ETA: Apearently the HI Express is in Waikiki but is further from the beach, and obviously, not as nice as the HI Resort was. They also opened an HI Express in Kona.

We have a 4 hour stopover in HNL. Any recommendations for what to do during that time?

This sounds fascinating for WWII history buffs:

"Experience an immersive two hour adventure that allows you to relive history as a Naval Aviator. You suit up in authentic WWII era flight gear, hop into the cockpit of an SNJ-5C for a one hour flight around O‘ahu. Fly over genuine battlefields with history in this unique return to WWII. This immersion into Naval Aviation will enhance even the most avid history enthusiast’s appreciation for this tumultuous period of the 20th Century."

I just wanted to jump in and say that Oahu really surpassed my expectations, and is not a second-rate Hawaiian island at all! The mountains along the eastern and northwestern shores are incredible, and there are many more swimmable, empty beaches on Oahu than Maui or Kauai by far.(never been to BI).

That's actually really good to hear as I may be heading to Honolulu in December but I would arrive there on Sunday night and need to leave Tuesday night. I was torn since everyone says to leave Oahu but if I did that I would waste way too much of the short amount of time I had there. Any suggestions on hotel options using points?

I used Wyndham Ilikai in Waikiki. It's ok nothing special. Studio with full kitchen, but $28 per day parking.

The problem with Oahu is that people get stuck in Waikiki and hate it. If you don't focus on Honolulu it's a great island, though I don't think it compares to the outer islands.

I think outside of Waikiki it does compare. Not a tier below.

We stayed in Wakiki but drove around each day to different parts of the island.  While it may not compare to the other islands, there are plenty of beautiful beaches, rain forests and things to do on Oahu.

Just get Oahu reveals.
