The problem with Oahu is that people get stuck in Waikiki and hate it. If you don't focus on Honolulu it's a great island, though I don't think it compares to the outer islands.
If I am there for 2 days with my wife, what would you suggest to do?

Depends when.
If government not shut down, Pearl Harbor Arizona Memorial is a must.
If winter time, North Shore to see massive waves and crazy people surfing them.
Windward size has some of the best beaches in the world (according to some ranking systems), such as Kailua or Lanikai.
Diamond Head has a nice walk to the top and nice views.
Manoa falls is a nice hike.
All of the above based primarily on my year on Oahu, 1995-96, with my DW. Obviously some things may have changed....

We lived in St Louis Heights during our year there. Rented a modest house that
Overlooked Waikiki and DH. Had a lovely lanai (mirpeset). Wouldn’t be a bad location for an Air!bnB rental.

That's actually crazy that you lived there for a year! What did you do for work, and if you don't mind me asking, are you Orthodox Jewish? If so, how did that work?

This is all hypothetical. Dw would not allow us to do this unless the country was named Israel.

Don’t mind at all.
We were not orthodox then, so I guess that makes us BT.  We used to drive the Pali Highway every Friday night to the Reform synagogue.  Good times!
I’m a physician.  Was there for a “gap year” between my residency and fellowship, doing a year of clinical teaching.

I understand that there is now a Chabad near Ala Moana shopping center.  I could see spending another year there, but AFAIK, there isn’t any real “community,” so probably not longer.  Would love if someone could CMIIW.

Good recs, I've done all this stuff. Also went Jetskiiing on the north shore, kayaked to a sandbar on the windward coast, and snorkeled Hanauma Bay on our honeymoon.

Should start a Wiki.

Oy. Just read that Chabad Hawaii has two sifrei Torah stolen a year ago January.  How awful.  I must have missed the news last year.  From searching online, doesn’t appear that they were recovered.   Just sickening.

Also rents have probably skyrocketed, not to mention the costs of bringing in food.

Also, I'm not sure what options would exist for people will school aged children.

Rents are up, but food prices have gone way down from what they used.
Chabad kids there do online schooling.

has anyone stayed at The Grand Islander by Hilton Grand Vacations?
debating between that and the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort.
Is one more Shabbos friendly than the other?
any other suggestions for Shabbos?

For the record, Hilton Hawaiian village will only give u a microwave if you let them know it’s for dietary medical reasons
The restaurant won’t store your food in the freezer but there is a freezer at the front desk in the managers office that u can store it in.
The stairs lock automatically from the outside, but you can get a security or manager to open
Guest rooms start on the third floor
There is one manager that used to work for Pesach programs and is very knowledgeable with kosher needs: Elias hartado

Just as an FYI. Gold and diamond members get a hospitality room day of checkout for 45 minutes
It’s a standard room. Great to shower or nap, have a coffee etc before leaving the property

I think it depends which building. We stayed in the colorful looking one and the stairwell was unlocked

Looking for a cheaper car rental for later in the year for 8 days, and the cheapest I can find for a mid-size car is $45/day for an 8 day stay and it's with Advantage which isn't ideal. Prices haven't changed at all for the last 4 months through all those cheap Hawaii car rental sites. Costco Travel or any normal site is way more than that. Are there any ways I haven't thought of to search for a cheaper car rental? Those $30/day rentals from Avis that are sold once a year may have come in handy now, but besides that, can't think of anything else.
