Update - it works perfectly!
I have this same piece. I put it as close as actually TOUCHING the router during setup and the "wireless" light doesn't go solid and no lights go on other than the power one.

I am looking for a solution for Wi-Fi signal strength.
The router is rather old but works well in the areas surrounding it.
I own this range extender http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-WA850RE-Universal-Wireless-Indicator/dp/B00E98O7GC but it's not that great still.
I am looking to extend Wi-Fi signal beyond that area.

Should I buy:
1) A good extender (keep old router).
2) A new router and keep the extender I have.
3) Buy a new router and a new extender.

Also, are these articles worth anything?

It might help if you said how old the router is or which router you have

I have this:
http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-WR841N-Wireless-Router-300Mbps/dp/B001FWYGJS/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1441909301&sr=1-1&keywords=tp+link+router
and from 2 floors below it I can download torrents @ 2MB/s from a floor below that I used to get decent connection on my laptop, but not the greatest. Obviously range would depend on what type of building you have.

I Dont know how big an area you want to cover, but I think you should get a new router, and see how that works with your current range extender.

IDK about Tomato but you can flash the router I linked with DDWRt here is a youtube

should a wifi signal extender be plugged in close to the wifi box or on the complete opposite side of the house where the signal is weak?

i have a verizon Mifi
One issue with the 3 that you listed is that they're not dual band, meaning they can't send and receive packets (data) at the same time. This will effectively cut your current speed in half, which can be an issue if your internet connection isn't too fast to begin with or if you're streaming video etc. To avoid this issue you can buy a dual band extender. Another option is to use a powerline adapter which works by sending data over the power line.

it it dual band?
No, but I didn't mean to say that you should never buy single band. I was just pointing out a possible downside to the inexpensive ones that aren't dual band. Anyway, you should see Wi-Fi signal improvement with any of these extenders and the one recommended by mendy has excellent reviews.

It won't be worse than it is now when you're out of range so it's a win win IMHO. Dual band is nice but double the price

weBoost i believe is reliable. don't have one myself but others i know use it and are happy with it.

just connected my netgear signal extender. how would i know if its connected correctly, besides for the obvious checking out how good the signal is? meaning theres lots of language involved that i don't know anything about. security stuff, etc. any help?
