AA Reengagement
« on: May 21, 2012, 01:29:30 PM »
An AA rep just told me that I had 38K miles expire in 2009. She said I can have them put back on my account by completing a flight and paying a $30 fee, as part of their reengagement program. The miles will post back on my account after I complete the trip, but I must call and pay the fee prior to flying in order for it to work.

I want to try and book a flight, pay the $30 fee, and then cancel the flight. According to the CSR I would have to actually fly in order to receive the miles, but she didn't sound so sure of herself.  Has anyone ever taken advantage of this program and have any input to offer?

I know people with 250k AA expired in '03 or so. Will this work?

I was told that some of my miles expired in 05 and others in 09, and all would be reactivated with this method, so I don't see why not.

I had like 45000 miles and they said if I did one roundtrip flight I would get them back and I had to actually fly (maybe this is different because of the $30 fee)

A friend of mine had this with about 200k , they made him pay $200 and re-issued the expired miles
no mention of flying
it CAN be done!

i had 20k that expired. They told me either i can take 1 round trip flight at least 1500 miles and i will receive all my expired miles. No fees. I just had to enroll in the program before i flew.
They also mentioned something about opening a CC, but i was planning on taking a trip so i just stuck with the first option.

UPDATE: I just called AA to find out if there's any new challenges that can reinstate my miles. They said if I pay the $30 fee now, I have 6 months to either earn 5000 miles from AA partners (ie Citi credit cards) or take 1 round trip flight. I have a 50,000 mile signup bonus coming on my next statement from a Citi Visa, so I paid the $30 and should theoretically be getting close to 90K next month!

(She also said I can pay $215 and have them reinstated immediately.)

And I just thought of something else. I put the $30 charge on my Citi Amex, so (again, theoretically) I should get the $150 AA credit.

I just spoke to a knowledgable sounding AA rep today about this issue. He said the 5000 miles re-engagement challenge only applies to base miles, not bonus miles so your 50,000 CC bonus might not work. I'm curious if it will though, because I am going to earn 5 miles per $ for the next 6 months and would love to know if those extra miles will count as base points.

5 miles per $ in any category with no cap? How did you get that?

Sounds TGTBT even for a targeted offer.

Yup -retention bonus. Up to 20,000 bonus miles (25,000 altogether after $5000 spend)

On top of that there is a targeted offer for + 2 miles per dollar on up to $1250 spend so a total of 7 miles per dollar there. I'm pretty sure you can double up these two offers because the fine print says offers may overlap.

Nice. I only got a 3MP$ retention up to 10K bonus miles ($5K spend)  :'(
BTW:
I am going to earn 5 miles per $ for the next 6 months and would love to know if those extra miles will count as base points.
If you're getting 5 MP$ you shouldn't we worrying about that question, you should be spending all $5K base anyways to get the bonus.
