What currencies? Are you in the US? How good a rate are you expecting?

I always have the same problem exchanging gbp/eur/chf and yet to find a decent rate. I end up at chase bank always.
Interesting there are no Jewish forex exchangers around as in Israel Uk etc

400 shirts x $6 profit per shirt is a couple grand in your pocket ;)

Silver/gold goods are very cheap as well.  May be worth looking into and making a quick profit rather than a loss on the exchange.

If I'm not interested in tracking down a meshulach, is my local Chase bank the best place to exchange few hundred euros into USD?

By "best" you mean best out of the worst?
Chase will not give you a good exchange rate.

So, did anybody find a decent exchange place?  I have Can $, Sing $, Thai Baht, Malaysian Ringgit, Philippine Pesos, and looked in Chase, Wells Fargo, and Citi, and WF had the best rates, but I needed to be a customer.  Well, I hate Wells, so I'm still on the look out.  What do you think about private exchange firms or airport exchangers?  Running out of ideas, and I need to change before these paper/plastic bills are out of circulation.  I'm in Los Angeles, CA area by the way.

if you have an amex platinum you can change money in the airport, without paying fees. They might not give you a great rate though

Too bad you barely have time to do what I did as you are leaving soon.  I was in Asia for over a month last Nov-Dec, and I set up a Charles Schwab account 2 weeks before leaving.  I made sure that they expedited the debit card, and I deposited enough money for that month.  I barely brought cash in my wallet (just for back up), and I brought my Chase Sapph and Ink Bold (no foreign transaction fees).  So, I used my cc's where they were accepted, and if I need cash, I would withdraw from any ATM that accepted Visa/MC as Charles Schwab credits back the fees at months end.  Win win!!!

A thought though: find out if any banks or partner banks that we have here are in Italy.  If you have an account here, you could withdraw there with minimal or no fees.  Update me on what you decide.
