As I've said, I think it's a great way to give צדקה. Not necessarily a great way to protect your family. It definitely does have its place if run properly.

Who are the rabanim watching it?

When I signed up, they publicized the names of many Rabbanim who were responsible for specific familes funds.
I do wish that they were more transparent, and had a board of Rabbanim.
They notify you after every death, that someone died with a certain amount of children, (I think they mention which city).

The reason why Areivim make sense, is these 3 facts:

1) they pay a specific amount per child not married, most people die with none or few of those.
2) If someone dies from a machla etc., they heavily research if the condition was pre-existing.
3) If chas Veshalom, a terror attack, or a plague, or a natural disaster would occur, which would kill a large amount of members, the rabbanim can waive that event, and not pay out. (So Areivim does not cover you, if killed in a mass [member] killing.)

Proud member. They are actually growing, though primarily in chassidish circles. There are also quite a few members that joined specifically as donors that wouldn't be paid in case of death. This helps with the numbers game.

The dealer that you buy it from will not write the title in your name. The dealer will write it to the lender and send it to them.

If you are buying from a private buyer and try to do this? I guess they could just call the loan.

The dealer that you buy it from will write the title in your name, and put the lender as a lienholder. The dealer will then send the title to the lender.

What do you gain by having it in your possession? You are anyway not able to sign the title over to someone else since there is a lien-holder. As the lien holder they would have the option to either call the debt or take possession of the car if you don't pay. For not mailing them the title? They can sue you or call the debt.
