I signed up with NRG Home energy for electric (not gas, because of gas credits), about a year ago with United Mileage Plan sign up bonus (12k, plus 3 times UMP a dollar with the CC), on a 3 month promotional rate and I call up every 3 months to sign up with the 3 month plan. It is by far the cheapest. The longer term options are more expensive, but the promotional 3 month term is great. You just have to make sure to renew it at the right time, so you don't pay their variable rate.

Cancelled recently, because even the 3 month pre variable was pretty similar to the utility rate. 2 months later I got a letter offering 20% off the February rate plus a $75 bonus after 2 months and 3% cashback monthly if I sign up again. The rate comes out to 7.6 kwh so it is a no brainer, especially with the summer rates coming. I set a reminder to call again in 3 months.

No. That was only upon first sign up (and after I cancelled once a few years ago).but I got promo rates every 3 months until recently.
