That being the case, my marketing team doesn't think that this should be Exhibit A in a case of defending morah's for price increases, being that it polls very low. Try instead to stress the fact that expenses skyrocketed, and also, if anyone is not convinced that morahs deserve every penny they make, just try staying home with your kids for a few days...
I think you missed the beginning of the conversation. Someone complained that when he registered 12 months ago, the morah gave a price of $xxx, and now -12 months later - when actually came time to collect payment, she raised her price.
I explained the reason for the price increase is because many things changed over the past 12 months. If registration opened 2 months ago, chances are the morah wouldn't need to change her price now. She would've listed the higher price at time of registration.

Good point. I just went back and took a closer look at the whole conversation. Sorry.

But thanks to Sam77, at least something good came out of this...  :P

The Lakewood corporate offices mostly still haven't adjusted the salaries of existing employees for inflation, so expect a lot of employee movement over the next half year.
Many large companies are laying off employees due to the recession.
You don't think the recession will eventually have an effect the Lakewood employment market?

My main complaint was about the schedule change that wasn't communicated until this week. It's not about the money (though obviously I'd love to pay less, I'm aware of the effects of inflation) - it's about throwing a wrench into my carefully laid plans based on her commitment to a schedule. A large percentage of playgroup research is determining the Morah's schedule since many parents are on a tight schedule themselves. To change that *and* raise the (already increased) amount by 17% is grounds for complaining.

As for your general complaint about booking 1 year in advance - I agree with you and think it's so utterly ridiculous. It's like every other self-made "crisis" in this town - everyone shrugs and just goes along with the inertia as it picks up speed until something inevitably crashes. No one (myself included) has the time/energy/resources to change a da*n thing. Maybe now with the influx of "immigrants" from other communities - things will change.

Who knows. But there's a breaking point where a mother will just stay home and not work if childcare is too much. So either they'll need a raise (or new job), or won't send their kids to childcare.

Mostly tech. Overall there are still more slots than workers willing to fill them for now.

Even the tech companies have mostly been laying off recruiters and marketing.

I just read through the other thread and saw your post. Changing the schedule right before the school year starts is completely not yashrus, but unfortunately it's not the first time I've heard of this.
I know a babysitter that did this last year, and messed over a bunch of people in the group. She decided to change her daily start time, and give off an extra for midwinter etc. Craziness. (Maybe it's the same morah, and she does this tactic every year ??)

They'll keep their kid home until he/she is 5 years old and entering primary?
So basically, homeschool for ages 1-5?

Back in the day some mothers had round robin groups - where each mother took a day with the same group of kids. The kids had the social interaction and the mothers taught them skills.

I don't know if that's common anymore - but perhaps mothers will start getting creative. Paying basically elementary school tuition rates for ages 1-5 seems not sustainable.

At some point it becomes economically feasible for schools to run their own pre k programs at a profit.

Schools are subsidized. They don't cover costs from the actual tuition that is paid.
Round robins become less common as being a SAHM becomes unusual in the Lakewood demographic except for the financially comfortable (who aren't nervous about the extra thousand dollars in daycare costs).

I usually think that people on forums and comment sections go overboard in jumping onto the bandwagon to bash someone. However, for once, I was pretty happy to see the near universal expression of condemnation for the submitter's implied attitude (which is likely just ignorance, not cruelty), and the support for our struggling youth.
