Does anyone have experience with these companies that pay your electric bill for you, and then you pay them with a 21% discount? They don’t change your energy supplier. They generate SRECS that they don’t need and they sell them to JCPL. I know there are a lot of scams in the energy space, so I’m looking to hear from someone with experience here.

21% discount sounds very high. There is a legitimate industry around selling remote net meter credits. I assume this is what you are referring to, but I'm not familiar with the availability and specifics in NJ.

They have a solar farm generating a lot of electricity, and some of that farm is "allocated" to you. Then every month you get a net meter credit for the electricity generated by your portion in the same way you would get a net meter credit if you have rooftop solar. The only difference is this is a "remote" net meter.

I recently signed up for a solar farm discount. It's 20% if you are a government program participant (Medicaid, snap, etc) otherwise it's 10%.

I don't pay them anything. The credit gets applied to my bill. It's not active yet, but that's how it's supposed to work.

When I've seen it, the full credit gets applied to your bill and then they bill you for it minus the discount. So if you get a credit of $100 and your discount is 20% they will bill you $80.

I'd love to see how it works here once active, when do they expect it to be active?

It is legit but different companies work differently. I am in the process of researching this and will let you know the results.

I have something similar in my area (not Lakewood, but elsewhere in NJ and my provider is PSE&G). I get solar credits on my bill (community/shared solar farm) for the amount that was generated that month (presumably total khw generated divided by total users that signed up). They opened a few months ago so it was initially < than my total bill starting out but now they are fully operational and its summer so the past 2 months the solar credit I got was more than my bill. If there is an excess it gets carried over to the next bill, they (PSE&G) credits the cash value of the kwh credited for that bill, this value is the supply value (but not tiered so could be lower than 100% of usage if next tiers are lower per kwh, on my last bill it worked out to > than actual supply usage by about 25¢ so it goes both ways), they also credit a portion of the delivery charges, but not the entire amount. Therefore if solar credits are > than total used that month you will still have a bill of fixed fees (like service charge, etc) + the remaining amount of delivery charges + small balance left over from tiered billing (if any). For me 100% credit is about $20 - $25 remaining on the bill. Then the solar farm co. bills you for the exact amount utility co credited you (not the total amount of kwh they posted to your bill) - your discount (for me 10%), they required a CC on file which they auto bill each month. The solar farm billing is about 2 months behind your electric bill since there is a delay in the data from utility co to them.

Here is an example how it works
Utility bill
Total: $110 (1000kwh)
- Service Fee: $10
- Supply: $70
- Delivery: $30

Solar Credits: 1500kwh
Applied to bill: 1000kwh
Carry Forward: 500kwh
------
Supply: $68 (it could be $70, it could be just over, it could be just under, depends on how they calculate compared to your actual tiers)
Delivery: $15 (again, depends on tiers and how much they decide is refundable from solar credits/net metering)
Total credits: $83
Total Due: $27


Then on solar farm bill (probably 1 - 2 months later)
Total: $83
- 10%: $8.30
Balance Due: $74.70

(I made up the numbers above but this is basically how it works)

A couple of reasons why I signed up and why I'll continue to do it.
1) I got a $50 GC for signing up
2) I got a $25 credit on my first bill
3) I save 10% of whatever kwh they give me, seems to be > than my usage now that they are fully operational
4) I only pay for what I actually use, i.e. what utility co. "applied" to that bill, they don't bill me for all "credits" if I didn't use them
5) I can pay with CC without a fee, therefore can earn rewards on my electric bill (PSE&G charges a fee for CC payment)

Only thing I'm unsure about is what happens to unused credits after 1 year, PSE&G says they will credit you the unused kwh on a yearly basis, does that mean they actually pay me for the amount of kwh I didn't use? does that mean that solar co. will actually bill me that amount - 10%? I guess I'll find out, but If so that means I'd make 10% on the amount I didn't use as well, either way I come out ahead.
