+1. Although in Lakewood, it goes far beyond what building you live. Your shirt color, length of your wife's sheitel, your occupation,  the shul you daven in... All are potential disqualifiers for getting your kids accepted into school.

Can someone link to the video where R' Steinman blasts someone, that not accepting a less frum kid into a school is GAAVAH! GAAVAH! GAAVAH!

Let me explain with a true story:
Im in a Lakewood park a few months ago, I observe two families;
1)The father is wearing skin-tight black jeans, a pink lacoste shirt, a small black yalmuka. The wife is sitting on a bench with a shaital almost waist length, a bright colored tight top and a short skirt with sandals, no socks.-Both are busy on their iphones. The three boys standing by the lake were advised by their mother to remove their yalmukas so they would not fall in water. With their matching "mushroom" style hair cuts and non jewish clothing, at first I thought the kids where non jews...
2) During bein hasdorim, the father with a black bushy beard, a threadbare suit and a sefer in hand pushes his yingelach in the swing- their peyos flying, while he pushes a second hand stroller. the wife is hard at work teaching in a local beis yakov.
This is lakewood today and this is why kids who come from families that have radically different priorities dont go to the same school school.
Are there any questions?

No one ever claimed that these kids should go to the same school.
The point is that every Jewish child should be entitled to a proper Jewish education, regardless of the tightness of the father's jeans or the length of the mother's shaitel.
Disallowing Jewish children from attending any school in Lakewood because of a misplaced sense of idealism and religious superiority is disgusting, arrogant, and totally not fitting for a good Jew. See above comment re R' Shteinman.

I heard a rumor that every time someone tries to open a more modern school they are shut down. But I have zero evidence to support this claim.

You don't think the multitudes of children who find themselves with no school to attend at the beginning of a school year or the hassle and worry that parents go through because of this indicative of anything?

There is an overall issue of lack of space. Every school is completely full and the 1 or 2 schools that open every year aren't enough to keep up with the growth of Lakewood.  Obviously that allows the schools to be picky.

No one ever claimed that these kids should go to the same school.

There is no rule that certain children can't attend any school in Lakewood. Each individual school may say no to that person for THEIR school which they're entitled to do. If you haven't got accepted into any school, there is a 'Vaad' that was set up who the parents go to and apply. The Vaad sits down with all of the principals and divides up the children who weren't accepted anywhere into the different schools so that each child goes somewhere. Now a parent may raise hell because the Vaad sent them to a school that wasn't their first choice, but every child in Lakewood is offered a spot in a school.

Some of the above posts make it seem like there are kids in Lakewood who must be going to public school because the schools have banded together and said since you dress like ABC or live in DEF, you can't go to any of our schools.

While I'm not crazy over the current reality, it's not the terrible injustice that people are making it out to be.

Each individual school has a right to choose the type of students they want to accept, and overall every child is placed somewhere.
