Use my points Wisely - Getting to South Florida
« on: May 23, 2012, 09:59:04 AM »
Need some help from the experts here.. I am trying to fly to South Florida with my wife in early August for 4 nights and I am looking for the best way to spend my points (or a little cash if necessary). I know that this is not the ideal time to go to FL, but it's when I can go....

I'm looking for Hotel+Flight+Rental Car (something fancy). Would like to stay close to beach and kosher food.

These are the Points I have

AA - 50K (mine)
AA - 50K (wife)
BA - 100K
UR - 80k
Priority Club - 65k
Southwest 50k
Hyatt - 1 Free Night Cat 1-4
Also have a Plat Amex (used for Perks, no spending points)

I thought about flying First Class using the 100K combined AA miles (off peak) and maybe staying 2 nights at the Crowne Plaza South Beach, and then I know there is a HYATT Pier 66 a little north, but not sure of the reviews (1 Free night). I Could also use the Southwest Points for the flights and save the AA points in case I need to go somewhere SW doesn't fly.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts/suggestions!!!!

I would use the BA miles for airline tickets if their is sAAver availability on AA.

Are you coming from NY? Unless you REALLY want to I would not fly first class for a short flight like that.
Also is it the car you want fancy? Or the hotel?
Do you want an oceanfront hotel?  Or are you flexible as far as hotels go?

Unless you are taking luggage First Class might not be necessary.

Definitely not worth flying in F for such a short domestic flight.

To even think about burning 100k AA on a flight like that almost makes me want to cry.

I would normally agree with you, but for me Saaver First Class is 50Kand I can't get Saaver coach (nonstop). So if I'm using AA miles on the flight it would have to be 100k and go first. The alternative would be to use the Southwest points for 50K (approx) for the flight.

Willing to stop? Date flexible?

A nonstop flight in business ORD-PBI is 45K BA for your dates.  Or 25K coach on UA.

@OP,

You still have enough time to sign up for some CCs (if you'd like) to help with hotels.

Dan, got a card (or cards) you can recommend for that? Seems the OP's got Hyatt already, so that one's out (unless his wife wants to apply).

My wife made me "swear" to stop opening up CC. Also, I was thinking of Saving the BA miles in case I needed to go international..... (Israel maybe, even though we rarely travel)

You have it backwards, you generally want AA for international, not BA.

aa are much more valuable for international than ba
EDIT: DAN you beat me to it again
