verizon treo activation w/o data package

i have a verizon phone with out internet service, just regular talk and text. Is there any way to transfer the service to a treo 755 (which i have already) w/o purchasing the data package for $30 a month? (In the store they tell me you cant but theres gotta be a way around it.)
