Who manufactured your last one?
Do you use your laptop for anything in specific?

I had a dell years ago and was unhappy with it. When i needed a new one i decided not to buy a dell because i was so upset with them and their customer service (can hardly understand them). I ended up buying a toshiba and hated it even more...im back with a dell now and so far so good. If i had to buy another, id go with dell...You can really get some great deals at times.

Look for "scratch and dent" models. Sometimes these babies get scratched in the factory, and they just sent them to the outlet and start over. The scratches are guaranteed to be only cosmetic, and I honestly can't even find the one on my desktop!
My laptop I bought a couple of months ago has a hairline scrape on the lid that can only be seen in certain light...

Studio 15" Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz, 4GB, 320GB, 2.0 mp webcam, Win7 64, $480. LOVE IT.

I got a Dell refurb and it has loads of problem.
I guess YMMV when it comes to them.

Hmmm... you got one. I got 3. And two others for family members, and we can all vouch for it.
Ok, I'll admit I had a problem with the DVD tray on one of them, and my friend had a problem with the wireless not working on the other... but it comes with the same Dell warranty as a new PC so I don't see what the big deal is. They replaced/fixed it right away in both of those cases.

Refurb Studio XPS 13.
Mysteriously power itself off when it feels like it and Dell won't do anything.

The refurbs may be quite good, but I think I'd rather wait for an amazing coupon on a new one and probably get a comparable deal.  There may be a good reason why the previous owner returned the computer...

Absolutely- the same award winning standard warranty that all new Dells come with.

I really don't see why Dan got so burned... lemons happen all the time, even on new models. You just have to call them and have them take care of it (my first refurb actually was missing two of the screws on the side of the DVD burner to hold it in place- I called them, and they ACTUALLY SENT A TECH TO INSTALL TWO MEASLY SCREWS. I actually felt bad about it, but they take care of you).

When you get a refurb for a complete care swap-out the warranty only lasts as long as the original computer's warranty.
Which meant that I was SOL...

Do they let you pay and extend it??
What does SOL mean??
