Topic Wiki

After hearing everyone coming home and talking about their flight issues, food issues, house issues, shul issues, program issues, kashrus issues, et al, I am more convinced than ever that building a dedicated full Pesach kitchen was the best investment I will ever make.

I have worked over Pesach in 5 star programs, gone to houses in Orlando and Palm Springs, etc. While there are certainly many nice aspects to them, there really is no place like home.

Wow, if there's anyone here I would expect to appreciate the complexity of Shabbos in Japan, it would be the guy calling himself a Mirrer!

If your pesach basement straddles the dateline, is there a shitta that holds it should be put in its appropriate thread?

Yes, but it's a minority shita held by 32.6% of the 65% of Litvishe Orthdox minorities in Jackson.

Depends if you hold like a shita that says the dateline can cross land and if it does, do we drag the whole continent to one side of the dateline...

Chassidesha poskim are cool with just doing Saturday?

-1

“Yeshivish” Jews comprise a significantly larger percentage of religious Jews than that.
Most Yeshivish Jews also do Asian Saturday as Shabbos in Japan.

I have no clue what the program did, but I'd be shocked if it was anything other than the local calendar.

The question is what they are doing is proper. As many of their prominent poskim/leaders seem to feel it is not.
No, the question was if more than 10% of people are choshesh for the chazon ish's shita

No, I raised a new question, which is whether or not it is proper to be part of the percentage of people who are not choshesh.

back of the napkin math doesn't seem like that as the Sephardi ashkenazi divide is 55-45 so within the 45% of ashkenazi jews my guess would be 60-40 chareidi-modox and the yeshivish crowd is likely less than half of all chareidim so that would be less than 13% percent yeshivish hence my rounding it to 10% but if you have better numbers im happy to be corrected
just pointing out some inconstancies with this thesis as monsey is more chasidish than litvish and Lakewood is likely at least 1/3 chasidim by now, taking away 2 of the 3 cities that are brought as proof of the thesis that the yeshivish crowd are more centralized and larger
No chance, even including greater Lakewood area

At the end of the day, what always gets me is that we are basically wired to think we are the center of the world, so "most" Jews are somewhat like me, with smaller and smaller percentages further and further away.

Are you disagreeing with the numbers which are apparently based on Pew and Nishmas? On what basis?

Chapgbt is telling me this
just fyi this is another example of chat gpt mixing things up based on this report from Nishma research where the numbers are reversed 60-40 chasidism- litvish but you are still right that they are roughly 27% of religious jews at 245,000 of roughly 900,000 in the us

Also, what did they do for the international date line shailos? did they have the longest pesach (some peoples favourite tape)?

Most Yeshivish Jews also do Asian Saturday as Shabbos in Japan.

I have no clue what the program did, but I'd be shocked if it was anything other than the local calendar.

@bluestrings?

The program followed the local calendar, and chametz was served before zman achila on April 12 & after Yom Tov on Sunday night, April 20th.

Was a pleasure to meet @bluestrings

Also, the most hotly debated topic on Pesach was NOT relevant to Pesach itself, but rather Sfiras HaOmer. For those of us who flew back direct to the east coast there is the question of when to keep Shavuos (I found out about this on 1st days).

Now that is a real can of worms. ;D

Lubavitchers won't fly one-way across the timeline during sefira if it can be avoided.
