Dan's TR on DD

Mochjas TR

DDF DO Planning Thread

Seven Mile Market - supposedly the largest kosher supermarket in the country.

Market Maven (formerly Seasons) - great prices for meat and chicken, also good place for shabbos food

Hotels:
Only 1 Close and decent hotel to Jewish area (but not quite walking distance) is this Hilton Doubletree

Airbnb in the frum community:
Eruv Inn
Edelweiss - Located about 15 minutes from the frum community, practically next door to Ateres Elka wedding hall

Otherwise, there are a number of nice hotels downtown (which is also the inner harbor area) and near BWI airport. There are no shuls in the downtown area with regular minyanim, aside from Mincha minyanim in various offices.

Restaurants in the Jewish area (in no particular order):

Dairy

Dunkin Donuts - 2 kosher locations
Here and Here

Croustille Cafe French Bakery - French bakery with many delicious dairy and pareve bakery items.

Milk & Honey Bistro - dairy homestyle cooking

Goldberg's Bagels - very good bagels and free wifi.

Mama Leah's - pizza that is a bit different, but IMHO (Lunatic), the best pizza in Baltimore

Tov Pizza - classic pizza shop - Mocha thinks this is a hell of a lot better than ^

Caramel's - pizza shop, also has sushi

Cocoaccinos/Pie 18 - cafe with sandwiches and salads, as well as custom made brick oven pizza

Playa Bowls Quarry Lake - "the original Acai bowl" - lots of great pareve options as well, delicious bowls

Pareve

Sushi Sakura
Cinnaholic Owings Mills - This location only was recently certified kosher pareve (across from the area Costco).

Meat

David Chu's - Reasonably priced great Chinese food and good sushi. Dan's rating - 7.25/10
Address: 7105 Reisterstown Road, Baltimore, MD 21215
Phone:(410) 602-5008
Not to be missed:
  • Curry Chicken

Dougie's- This is now CLOSED. Leaving it up in the wiki since it is newly closed in case people are looking for it (9/29/23)

Knish Shop - Excellent subs and good sushi - Good place to pickup food for shabbos
Address: 508 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville, MD 21208
Phone:(410) 484-5850

The Club Deli & Grill - Newly opened (2023) fleishig meat/sandwich restaurant

Taam Tai - Reasonably prices Asian food. Great Lo Mein. Located between Mama Leah's and Goldberg's Bagels

Kosher Bite - fast food (American, Israeli, and Chinese)
Not to be missed:
  • Double Burger (better than KD's a"h)

Serengeti - Traditional excellent steakhouse (review Here, Here and Here) - definitely the nicest place in Baltimore.
Address: 2839 Smith Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21209
Phone:(410) 413-6080
Not to be missed:
  • Lamb Burger on Ciabatta Bun
  • Short rib eggrolls

Accent's - reasonably priced burgers, sandwiches and salads. Also has a full size liquor store.
Address: Greenspring Shopping Center, 2839 Smith Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21209
Phone:(410) 602-2224
Not to be missed:
  • English Pub Burger

Yesh Hummus and Grill - Excellent shawarma and other Israeli food.

Cafe Shalom - Located inside Sinai Hospital's Greenspring Cafe, they have dairy, meat, and pareve options. The only restaurant that's also open over Chol Hamoed Pesach.

Any good?

Are the restaurants in DC/Silver Spring better than B'more?  I can base myself in DC at the Fairmont in a suite for free, but in B'more it would be $80/night out of pocket, but I figured closer to more/better restaurants.
how many nights do you plan on staying in the area?

yep  their subs are out of this world!!

1. the owner of Subway was Frum.  It wasn't doing well so he sold it.

2. Umami is very good.  It is a glorified chinese restaurant.  Much nicer venue, bar, and imho, the food is much better.  Yes it is a little more expensive.

3. Accents is decent, but the service is veeerrrryyy slow.  It is basically a glorified take out.  If you want an amazing sub or sushi, the Knish Shop is your best bet.  Not a lot of place to sit but the food is amazing!

4.  Silver spring does not have many places.  There used to be a place nearby called Pomegranate but they closed down.

This is what I remember from 2 years back...doubt much changed

Dairy
7 - Cocoaccino's Kosher Coffee Cafe
2831 Smith Avenue  Baltimore, MD 21209-1426
(410) 653-3888

6 - Mama Leah's Gourmet Kosher Pizza
1500 Reisterstown Road (Club Center shopping center)
Baltimore, MD 21208

7 - Goldman's Kosher Bakery (bagel shop)
6848 Reisterstown Rd.
Baltimore, MD 21215

Meat
7 - Accents Grill (pretty good Burger and chicken soup)
2839 Smith Ave  Baltimore, Maryland 21209
(410) 602-2224

6 - David Chu's China Bistro
7105 Reisterstown Rd
Baltimore, MD 21215

7 - Knish Shop  (wicked deli sandwiches)
508 Reisterstown Rd.
Baltimore, MD 21208

5 - Kosher Bite
6309 Reisterstown Rd.
Baltimore, MD 21215
Goldmans bakery is just a bakery, not a bagel shop and it is now located in Seven Mile Market.  What I think you are referring to is Goldbergs Bagels which is a full fledged bagel shop which happens to be very good.
1500 reisterstown rd.
Baltimore, MD 21208

And for takeout for shabbos etc. Knish Shop is by far your best bet.

And Rosendorf is a family here that makes challah and they sell it in all the Kosher Establishment.

I love this, Finally a thread where I can offer some help.

I'll second that about the Knish Shop...best place to eat down here in chutz la'aretz...not the prettiest restaurant, but still great nonetheless
Accents is decent, not great, not terrible, but like somebody said - very slow
If you're looking for quick greasy take out food, you can go to Kosher Bite, or if you're feeling nostalgic, you can go to the recently opened up Dougies

The Knish shop is good (more like a regular deli but they happen to have some great Sushi there!) and if you're lucky you'll run into Mosi there. He's the owner and one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.

Any other opinions on David Chu vs. Umami, Knish vs. Accents, and Mama Leah vs. Tov Pizza?
What not to miss at any of those places?

4.  Silver spring does not have many places.  There used to be a place nearby called Pomegranate but they closed down.

It's actually re-opening (new owner), this week.  Located in Potomac, not Silver Spring - about a 15 minute drive away.

Any other opinions on David Chu vs. Umami, Knish vs. Accents, and Mama Leah vs. Tov Pizza?

David Chu's is by far the best restaurant in the Baltimore/DC area.  Portions are filling and prices are very reasonable.  Menu is very extensive.

you can't go wrong with chu's or umami...chu's is your regular run of the mill chinese place, and umami, is maybe a touch nicer and better, but either way you'll be fine [at umami's - if you like pad thai, theirs is really good]

knish shop i think is better, but is mainly a deli place, that has sushi also, so if you want other stuff as part of your fleishig fortified supper accents has deli, sushi, and the other regulars of a fleishig place (eg - steak, salads...)
[knish shop - any deli sandwich will be great]

in regards to mama leah's vs tov's - personally, neither of them i think are that great, mama leah's is a little more "restaurant style" pizza store, whereas tov's is your regular pizza joint...if you had to pick one - if you're looking for a sit down place, go for mama leah's, if not, go tov's
[if you're at mama leah's try their garlic knots, very different than the run of the mill, and good]

There's a Hyatt Place that seems close to the Jewish community and is cheap, so I'll pay for the convenience over staying at BWI.
Anyway the Aloft would cost be 1,350 points after the plat amenity (worth about $30 on the market)+$30, so about $60.  The HP would cost $80 but would net 1,000 points (worth about $16 on the market), so that's about $64.

I have expiring free nights I can use at the 5 star Fairmont in Washington DC, but it seems like a major shlep to any decent eateries from there.

Eli's Restaurant in DC used to be very good (haven't been there in years). Right by Dupont Circle.

Eli's is excellent.  About a 10 minute walk from the Fairmount.  In DC there is also Distrikt Bistro.
