Dan's TR on DD

Mochjas TR

DDF DO Planning Thread

Seven Mile Market - supposedly the largest kosher supermarket in the country.

Market Maven (formerly Seasons) - great prices for meat and chicken, also good place for shabbos food

Hotels:
Only 1 Close and decent hotel to Jewish area (but not quite walking distance) is this Hilton Doubletree

Airbnb in the frum community:
Eruv Inn
Edelweiss - Located about 15 minutes from the frum community, practically next door to Ateres Elka wedding hall

Otherwise, there are a number of nice hotels downtown (which is also the inner harbor area) and near BWI airport. There are no shuls in the downtown area with regular minyanim, aside from Mincha minyanim in various offices.

Restaurants in the Jewish area (in no particular order):

Dairy

Dunkin Donuts - 2 kosher locations
Here and Here

Croustille Cafe French Bakery - French bakery with many delicious dairy and pareve bakery items.

Milk & Honey Bistro - dairy homestyle cooking

Goldberg's Bagels - very good bagels and free wifi.

Mama Leah's - pizza that is a bit different, but IMHO (Lunatic), the best pizza in Baltimore

Tov Pizza - classic pizza shop - Mocha thinks this is a hell of a lot better than ^

Caramel's - pizza shop, also has sushi

Cocoaccinos/Pie 18 - cafe with sandwiches and salads, as well as custom made brick oven pizza

Playa Bowls Quarry Lake - "the original Acai bowl" - lots of great pareve options as well, delicious bowls

Pareve

Sushi Sakura
Cinnaholic Owings Mills - This location only was recently certified kosher pareve (across from the area Costco).

Meat

David Chu's - Reasonably priced great Chinese food and good sushi. Dan's rating - 7.25/10
Address: 7105 Reisterstown Road, Baltimore, MD 21215
Phone:(410) 602-5008
Not to be missed:
  • Curry Chicken

Dougie's- This is now CLOSED. Leaving it up in the wiki since it is newly closed in case people are looking for it (9/29/23)

Knish Shop - Excellent subs and good sushi - Good place to pickup food for shabbos
Address: 508 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville, MD 21208
Phone:(410) 484-5850

The Club Deli & Grill - Newly opened (2023) fleishig meat/sandwich restaurant

Taam Tai - Reasonably prices Asian food. Great Lo Mein. Located between Mama Leah's and Goldberg's Bagels

Kosher Bite - fast food (American, Israeli, and Chinese)
Not to be missed:
  • Double Burger (better than KD's a"h)

Serengeti - Traditional excellent steakhouse (review Here, Here and Here) - definitely the nicest place in Baltimore.
Address: 2839 Smith Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21209
Phone:(410) 413-6080
Not to be missed:
  • Lamb Burger on Ciabatta Bun
  • Short rib eggrolls

Accent's - reasonably priced burgers, sandwiches and salads. Also has a full size liquor store.
Address: Greenspring Shopping Center, 2839 Smith Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21209
Phone:(410) 602-2224
Not to be missed:
  • English Pub Burger

Yesh Hummus and Grill - Excellent shawarma and other Israeli food.

Cafe Shalom - Located inside Sinai Hospital's Greenspring Cafe, they have dairy, meat, and pareve options. The only restaurant that's also open over Chol Hamoed Pesach.

Downtown Area

Me Latte - small kosher cafe located in Johns Hopkins

I'd legitimately appreciate seeing that get discussed. Tolls from NY-baltimore are a lot but a lot of the tricks to avoid them aren't worth it
depends what you consider worthwhile, although I would agree with you

After taking them, takes a good extra 1/2 hour for sure.

List of the places to save on tolls from MD- Brooklyn:
Tidings Bridge ( above).
Delaware Toll  ( getting up right before and going around)
Taking 295 instead of Turnpike and then returning to Turnpike at 7A.

Exit 7A vs exit 7- I prefer the latter because its a 1 minute connection the the turnpike as opposed to a 5 mile drive east on i-195

On the NY-Bal trip I'd sometimes take exit 7A and go into trenton to connect to 95. But thats only if traffic is likely to be light going past Philly

What do you use for navigation? Waze tells you how much regular tolls are per route, and can show you alternate routes to save money.

I don't use nav for trips that I've done 100x. Probably used mapquest 20+ years ago and haven't learned any new tricks since. What am I missing out on?

IME, it depends on the time of day. For example, 295 adds only a few minutes at night, but during rush hour, there is often traffic near philly which can slow you down a lot. Turnpike can slow you down in the beginning since it's 2 lanes and you can get stuck behind 2 trucks, while 295 has much fewer cars in the beginning.
(Incidentally, the tpk has gotten much better since they added to the the split roadway). Delaware till also only takes a couple extra minutes at night, but during the day you can get stuck at the traffic lights.
It all really depends how much spare time you have. It's rare that an extra  20 minutes to a half hour (for all 3 detours) makes a major difference to me, but occasionally I don't bother going around any if I am in a rush.

I usually keep waze on for cops, but I guess if you are driving below the speed limit you don't need that

@lubaby just tried. How does waze show alternate routes? I only see avoid tolls setting- its all or nothing. Where is the setting to give me a choice to pay or avoid for individual tolls along the route?

Not exactly sure what your referring to, but if you put in a destination waze will give you a route automatically. If you would like to see other possible routes you can do so by clicking the slide up bar from the bottom and there are three choices. The left choice is called routes:

But their other options are just arbitrary routes, and don't necessarily avoid specific spots. I don't find it to be a helpful feature unless it's an extremely short distance without too many options to get to the destination

That's what I thought. Maybe the "Routes" feature is more helpful while you're driving as you approach a toll vs. shun situation but that's not how I like to drive, especially for a route I know by heart

No, that's to complicated. You'd use it from the beginning.

Route 1, 3h 37 min, $25 tolls.

Alternate routes:
Route 2, 3h 57min, $20 tolls.
Route 3, 4h 37min, $5 tolls.

You can play around with this website, likely more helpful for what you want.
https://tollguru.com/toll-calculator

You can put in gas cost and your cars mpg to compare savings (more gas cost, less tolls, possibly wash on savings etc.)
Also which e-z pass you have.
