It's considered a comprehensive claim and should not affect your rates
Be wary of any claims on your record. If you can live without it better not to.

Thank you both for responding. Can either of you elaborate or provide a source?

This Forbes article says that there are "chargeable" and "non-chargeable" accidents and seems to say that, insurance companies are not legally allowed to raise rates for "non-chargeable" accidents. I am having trouble finding the criteria used in New Jersey for these classifications.

I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

This is very interesting.
Can you perhaps provide a source?

Thanks.

Has anyone had experience with Metromile? They seem cheaper since they base it on amount of miles driven. They're also only available in select states- NJ Yes, NY no.

Do a lot of people use this? Does it actually come out to be cheaper?

How do you handle a new teenage licensed driver in your household anyway to soften or avoid the insurance rate hike?

what are some of the things you can do?

Give them their own address and tell them to get their own insurance. Saved my parents a few bucks.

Alternatively, if the insurance is in the name of a nonprofit, adding teens doesn't make it go up as much. (Doesn't apply to most people.)
Failing at maintaining Lurker status.

Cheaper for a teenager to get their own insurance then to be added to the family plan? Not talking about who is paying for what, just the total overall cost..

Huh not so easy to send an 18 year old packing and why would that be cheaper anyway(if they get their own policy)?  can they get their own policy if they live with you?
