Huh not so easy to send an 18 year old packing and why would that be cheaper anyway(if they get their own policy)?  can they get their own policy if they live with you?

Apartment 2A.

Cheaper for a teenager to get their own insurance then to be added to the family plan? Not talking about who is paying for what, just the total overall cost..

Like all things insurance, it depends on the cars covered, the people on the policy, and the location. I don't know that it would be cheaper in most cases, I just know it has worked out in the past. Was a while ago, though.

who is kind with new teenage drivers Geico?
I'm not familiar with who is generally cheaper. You can also go to a broker who can do some shopping for you.

Once you're at it, it's a good idea to make sure you aren't paying for coverage you don't need. Although it's not very expensive, people often pay for uninsured motorist property coverage that's way more expensive than their car is worth.
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

How do you handle a new teenage licensed driver in your household anyway to soften or avoid the insurance rate hike?

what are some of the things you can do?
If the person dorms at school you can tell the insurance that they dorm away from home. Also, IME, the insurance often doesn't find out about these new drivers.

who is kind with new teenage drivers? Geico?
I had been with Liberty Mutual for 20 years. I'd shop around every 4 or 5 years and they were always the lowest.... until I tried adding my teenage daughter. They wanted +$2,200 to add a teen driver! I called Geico and it was only +$550/yr more than I was paying with Liberty for identical coverage so I switched. Interestingly, I removed her from the policy this year while she's away at seminary and it dropped my premium by $700/yr.

How much can I expect my insurance to go up after being involved in an accident (my fault)?

I am trying to figure out if it will be cheaper in the long run, If I just pay for the damage myself.

Thank you.

There are way too many variables. How much is the damage?

Did you have a body shop look at it? It can be way more expensive than you imagine.

What are you currently paying for insurance?

The body shop only saw one car and said, it is around $2,000 damage.
The other car has considerably less damage, so I'm being generous and saying around $3000 for both cars.

I am paying approximately $155 per month

Don't underestimate the amount of damage on the other car. There's always the possibility there will be more hidden damage. Unless you have a really bad record that would make insurers wary of insuring you, you're probably better off filling a claim. If they raise your rates significantly you can always find a new insurer. (You should always shop around regardless)

+1
You're paying insurance for a reason

Yes, but if it will end up costing me more in the long run you'll agree I shouldn't claim, correct?

You'll most likely come out ahead by going thru insurance. You also don't have to lay out the money up front.

Just had a great experience with Gabi.com. Saving $561 a year on car insurance (originally quoted me $703 savings, but after going forward they pulled my driving record and told me I'll only save $561).

@Dan do you have a referral link?

Got hit by a semi trailer, very minor damage probably just a bumper. Officer said the insurance info would be on the report. Just got the Report and it says Self Insured. (Cop and Driver seemed pretty chummy. I think the cop also played around with the report)

How does it work when a driver is self insured?

It most likely  means the company he works for is covering the cost, instead of an insurance company.
