I am with metromile. it uses a pulse device that you plug in all the time and it tracks the mileage driven. You pay a base rate  usually at least $30 a month and then 4 to 7 cents per mile driven. When I changed my car after I bought a new car, it killed my car battery and I had to get a jump. The dealer blamed that device. After 6 years with them with zero claims, they recently increased my rate during renewal  and it is now $45 base rate  and 6.5 cents per mile. I drive  very little but I need the car for my family and running errands. I may end up paying $60 a month. I checked regular car insurance rates with  many companies and they all are still higher  then my new increased rate with my current insurance company.

only in few states. yes, i am not happy they increased my base rate and per mile rate even though i have zero claim for 6 years. I am actively looking to switch to regular insurance company and i don't like the battery draining pulse device that you have to plug in.

I got those words. But what does it give me? If I have great regular health insurance, do I need good PIP numbers?

Are you sure? I thought regular health insurance doesn't cover injuries from auto accidents (and workplace).
My Tapatalk notifications don't always work.

What's the ideal/common "Supplementary Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (SUM) Coverage" amount in addition to having $50k in PIP?

Most people get the same amount as bodily injury.

In NY you need to be offered the same as bodily injury, you can decline it, but officially need to be offered the same amount

Been with USAA for a bit over a year, was the cheapest option for one car. When we got a second car they doubled our rate.

Got a quote from Geico for about half of what I'm currently paying, though they don't offer accident forgiveness immediately. I have that on my current policy.

I think it's worth the savings to forgo that, but would appreciate hearing other perspectives.

Definitely make the switch.

A big insurance tactic is to include something small that people don't want to lose so they stick with you no matter the price. I believe there are some insurance companies that include cell phone insurance, and there are people who pay more for car insurance than their phone is worth to keep the cell phone insurance. It makes no sense financially, but they're great at latching on to human behavior
