London or Madrid
« on: June 06, 2012, 06:20:57 PM »
I have a choice of either visiting London or Madrid. I've never been to either one, so I am reaching out to fellow DDF members for advice or opinions on what should be my pick.

London is extremely expensive, but more to see there IMHO.

I voted Madrid. Because I could see a person getting to London faster in the future.

Some small tidbits:

London: -has a tremendous Jewish community =kosher food,
-if you enjoy museums and architecture,
-is very very expensive,
-if you have a liking to crappie weather and crappie British attitudes.

Spain: -cheap clothing (headquarters for Zara ? And many more famous brands),
-has very high anti-Semitism,
-barely any Jewish infrastructure leftover.

And together let us all sing: ohhhhhhhh, bartzelona bartzelona....

Ahhh, Joe Ammar.., y'hei zichro baruch.

London is very expensive, there's no denying that.

I didn't deny that, but it's not more expensive than other European cities I've visited. I've never been to MAD, but I'm assuming that as a tourist oriented city, it won't be cheaper than London.

It's been 9 years since I was in London, but I recall being shocked by prices of everything from the tube, to taxis, to kosher food, to activities.
I thought Paris was cheaper in all of those categories.

The tube is very reasonable if you get an Oyster card (you pay a £5 deposit which you get back if you return it). A ride from the LHR to my area (~1 hr drive) will cost you £1.40/£2.60 (peak/off peak).

Black cabs should definitely be avoided. They are terribly overpriced, although they really know where they're going, as opposed to NY's yellow cabs which need the passenger to give them turn-by-turn directions from JFK (true story). The local car service is £2.50-£3 for a local trip.

Kosher food is more expensive than most of the US, but the same as, or cheaper than the rest of Europe. ZRH is what I'd call overpriced. I'll be in Paris in August iy"h, so I'll be able to compare. Here are some examples of prices here-

It would indeed, alas all tickets that still are available are either to very uninteresting events, or way overpriced...

Spain: -cheap clothing (headquarters for Zara ? And many more famous brands),
I spent over two months in various Spanish cities and, after scouting many Zara stores, I was very surprised to find very little at cheaper prices than the US Zara locations.
-has very high anti-Semitism,
Very high anti anyone that's not like them (much like the nazis), coupled with anti-semitism. I have my thoughts about the Spanish though I don't think the mods would appreciate if I shared them here.
