Update: 6/16/15:
So I smed chase again and got the same response, denying to match to 140k. I then called Chase and got a very nice rep who tried to match it for me but was unsuccessful. It said in her system that they were only matching to 140k credit cards that were applied before April 30th. I applied May 14th. She then gave me 5k Ritz points as a courtesy and told me to try to call Ritz Rewards and ask them to replace my 2 free nights with the equivalent amount of points (probably not 140k). I did just that and the Ritz rep said she cannot do that. Blah blah.....
This really sucks <img src="http://s3.amazonaws.com/tapatalk-emoji/emoji35.png" />

Update: 3/23/15: Many recent reports of successful match to 140k offer via SM
Updated link: https://creditcards.chase.com/credit-cards/ritz-carlton-card.aspx
Standard offer is for 2 free nights at Ritz Cat 1-4 which is not too bad either.

Update 2/9/15: DEAD
current offer  140k bonus points +$300 airline credit annual fee 395 not waived
link https://www.theritzcarltonrewardscard.com/offer140k

To get $300 airline credit call 1-855-896-2222
don't buy gift cards from Chase affiliated airlines (United, SW..)
As Chase may be able to see what you purchased

JetBlue seat upgrades and delta seat upgrades worked for me.
Airline GC are very YMMV as there are reports of chase asking for receipts.
(Seat upgrades are officially covered in the T & C.)

I can't imagine chase not allowing the use of the $300 airline fee credit for airline gift cards. They seem to be processing these requests at their own discretion and every time I call them using the designated number from the card, their only concern is how to make my day a better one. After I thank them for asking how I am doing, they just ask for the date and amount and I am good to go. I have gotten refunded on actual airline ticket purchases as well as many other creative items, without hesitation.

Clearly this whole process is hit and miss YMMV. In the end, there are a few VERY CLEAR facts - that after reading here, and other forums stand true:

1) Most of anything that is travel related and not upgrade related from UA will be denied, as they get level 3 data
2) I have seen/read about AA being very good for award taxes and even flights - someone even got away with a 300 GC on AA! Man that is great! I tried a 300 UA GC and they saw it was a GC
3) Other airlines as well, delta, AS, SW, and others sem to be OK with award taxes and GC

With all this said, it is still up to the SM or CSR on the phone - the game is VERY YMMV

All you have to charge it and then call and they refund as opposed to platinum that you have to designate which airline first etc.

Like one would with the Arrival+ booking a refundable Southwest ticket?

You say should be, what did you use your credit on?
