Ok after reading this thread from start to finish as well as others I'm still a bit fuzzy and confused - I'm stuck on if you add an AU on an Amex, with their SS#, will that AU be affected by the primary cardholder's credit utilization? I'm helping out my cousins and I'm not sure what is the best approach for building credit for their 18 year old son (who got denied by Amex and I started him off with a cap1 & Citi). Both parents have scores in the low 700's, one 34% credit utilization (PRG) and one 67% (plat) both with timely monthly payments. Which card would be the best to add him as an AU on? What I'm not understanding is whether the credit utilization is going to affect his credit score and how it will show up on his credit report in terms of the card's history affecting how long his credit history is going to be. I really appreciate any advice/explanations/suggestions! Thanks!

Don't add him to a card with a high balance.

Not sure if Amex still backdates, though can't hurt to put him on the card with the lower utilization. It will help build history and if they backdate it, even better.

Backdating is Amex backdating his history to the card members? Even if my uncle was a Amex member since 1974 and his son is only 18? Or is it that on his credit report the card's history he is added as an AU on will show up thus giving him a long credit history.

Like i said, not sure if this works anymore, but people have been "Amex members" since before they were born.

Either way. If the son needs to build credit, add him to one of the accounts.

Doing that now. In terms of the other kids (ages 14 and younger) it doesn't make a difference which card they are added to bec they don't need the credit history immediately rather just trying to build them up for the future? If that's the case which card is cheaper to add on 5 AUs? I know the plat is $175 for three but is the PRG really $100 for each AU?

Best bet may be to downgrade one of the cards to a no AF card. Or apply for a card which offers free AU's.

No problem.  Just be careful to do this with a card with no forex fees.
