Gas Stations-What happens when you prepay?
« on: June 12, 2012, 12:58:54 AM »
What happens when you prepay for example $25, as opposed to filling up? When you fill up your entire tank, you hear it pouring out gas until your tank is full and then it stops, but when you prepay $25 for example, you hear it pouring out gas until around $24.67 (by Shell for example), and then you don't hear anything as it just slowly counts down the rest of the pennies.
Are you really getting gas for those 35 cents, or is it just counting out those pennies to hit $25?

No, they're not stealing your money. When it nears the amount you prepaid, it slows the flow of gas to be more precise.

… but it could be like the light in the refrigerator. Do we know for sure if it goes off when we close the door?  :)

But you don't hear gas flowing at that point, while if you are filling up on your own and stop it at a certain point, it was flowing strongly until the second you stopped it.

Machine versus human. Just the way it's programmed.
I did notice that every gas pump has a state seal (just like grocery stores (etc.) checkouts) I assume that means they are checked that the owners don't tamper with the weight/volume.
But you could be right. There's no way of knowing.

@Deal Guy
Why don't you pull the hose/nozzle pit of the car when it gets up that point, and check if there is anything coming out?

Really?? This sound like your first time at a gas station. It slows down because it doesnt want to pump past that amount, so it pumps less at a time so you hear less noise....

it's pretty simple when you put an amount they dont want it to go past, when you dont put a cap, they have no idea when you will stop, 25, 35 etc. so it doesn't slow down.

Was just at Safeway to fill up. I always get my max 30 gallons so I have to also bring a 5gal can. I can confirm when it slowed down for the last .25 the gas was still flowing!  :)

first of all you feel the vibration in the handle. second of all, if your so nervous about being ripped off, just take out the spout to the point where you can see the end of it. and watch the gas slowly poor out.
