I don't know how much the V1 costs these days... but i have it for over 8 years and saved me many many times.... also if they come out with new versions you could send it in for about $100 and they'll update it.
really ? i thought free updates ... ??

I sent it back a few years ago for an update and IIRC it was about $100 (would be cheaper if I didn't want it rushed) but I don't remember the exact price.

I admittedly don't know anything about these.

Is this a good deal? I saw it on groupon. Please advise. http://www.groupon.com/deals/gg-escort-solo-s2-radar-detector-1?sid=VTgxZXZRb0JDamdBQUNmQW9iY0FBQUFA&utm_source=GPN&utm_medium=afl&utm_campaign=200003&tsToken=US_AFF_0_200003_200248_0

If not, what do you recommend?

Thanks

I would go with the valentine one, though it is the most expensive

What's considered a good deal for it?

Standard price is $399 so pretty much anything less is a good deal.
If you buy it used make sure you know the name of the person your buying it from. Because if you ever call them or try to order parts they will ask you for the model number and who you bought it from. I'm assuming if it's stolen they will make you an issue, though I don't know for sure what they do if it's stolen.

It's been discussed up thread.
It's from a while ago but don't think much changed.
Which escort you talking about?

The Passport Max.  Escort seems to have redone their line while Valentines don't appear to have changed much in years.  That's why I wanted some feedback.

Valentine change their internal parts... So they may look the same but have different features.

As far as I know, the only thing that changed from the v1.8 which I have to the current one is basically only app integration.  The sensitivity to the signals is the same. (valentine doesn't recommend the update)

I'm with you that the the 8500 isn't the best (its definetly the best for that price) did u consider the valentine?? (im just curious to know what others think about the valentine, as I think its the best) also was the cop shooting laser, instant on, pacing you, around a bend.......??
What are these things?
Also, I remember reading about a laser signal damage device, where can I get it? How's it called? What's a good one?
Thanks!
I try my best :-\

This is what it says when I put my serial number in:

V1 Description: Radar circuitry known in-house as V1.8.A-POP2 with Euro Mode.

Comment: This is our latest and best performer on both radar and laser.

Upgrade Recommendation: You already have our best performer, enhanced by crystal-controlled frequency tuning.  More recent V1s, however, have two additional features.  Traffic Monitor Filter eliminates the K-band false alarms caused by a traffic flow-measuring system being installed along some U. S. highways.  SpeedInfo sends frequent K-band radar bursts into the traffic stream (www.speedinfo.com to learn more).  If you drive in an area with one of these systems, this upgrade will pay off immediately.  Extended Serial Protocol (ESP) enhances two-way communication with SAVVY and future peripheral devices.

Our V1.85 Upgrade* for this series of V1 will produce the following benefits:

Traffic Monitor Filter eliminates false alarms caused by SpeedInfo, a traffic-flow monitoring system that sends frequent K-band radar bursts into the traffic stream. For more information, click here. This software algorithm is installed at the factory but not activated. For activation instructions, [ur=http://www.valentine1.com/lab/techreport3.aspl]click here[/url].

Extended Serial Protocol (ESP) enhances two-way communication with SAVVY and future peripheral devices.

*One-year limited warranty starting at upgrade date, same as new units.

-- Upgrade to V1.85: As soon as we receive your old unit (in operable condition with no tampering of the serial number) we'll replace two circuit boards and install revised firmware, then return it to you in the shortest possible time with a new serial number to indicate its revised capability.
PRICE: $199 plus shipping

AFAIK none of those features will effect the sensitivity of the sensors. The updates are just extra features added to the 1.8 series.
Anyways to be honest I haven't reresearched this field in about 3 years.

True but if you live in one of those areas where they use radar for traffic flow info, you might want to do the upgrade. Unless I totally miss understood the way that operates.

There actually is a lot. I was looking for one anyway (see above). I love the site and all, but before this spree for the past year I didn't buy a lot because often times you get a good deal for things that you don't need, which is really a bad deal. When deal meets need I strike. Also, I return some of the items.

Moreover, with all the money I have made from verizon upgrades and other methods through this site discussed in PM, I have come out even on this crazy shopping spree. It's pretty crazy. Probably like 5000 in merchandise for free.  :)
