Anyone have a way for people not in these places to get the credit?
I just called the Hat Box in Chicago. They said they would be open to swiping Amex cards which could possibly be used as a credit at a Hat Box location in Lakewood/Brooklyn etc. but I need to speak to the individual stores to see if they agree to transfer the credit.

I called the Lakewood Hat Box and the problem is that their store is owned by a different partner than the Chicago store. They said to call back tomorrow to see if they are willing to go through with it.

They would have to call the Chicago store for each guy to verify their purchase, the Chicago store would have to spend hours swiping cards, and then they need to work out the money between them (Chicago pockets money, but Lakewood gives away merchandise!).

Set up a way for it to all be done online?

They don't have a website :(
Keep in mind, this is different than a charity. When you give $10 to a charity, they get $10. When you spend $10 at a store, they don't make $10 income....

They could be making tens of thousands in sales with this easily.  Should be able to cover to cost of finally joining the 20th century with a website.

I donít intend on buying anything in these cities, and I am sure that many other people donít either. It would be nice to use this for charities. [The donated sums could be factored into Maaser, thus netting the giver as well.]
This offer is not directly eligible for charities, but here is an idea.
  • I am sure that charities in the above-mentioned cities would appreciate some store credit in the local Kosher grocery store, or any other small business they constantly do business with.
  • People interested in donating would provide their credit card details to the charity.
  • The charity would collect this info and pass it on (in bulk) to the store/small business.
  • The store/small business would charge each card $10, and provides the charity with a credit for that amount. [I guess the store/small business could even take a small cut for the hassle.]
I donít know anyone who deals with a charity in any of these cities. But if you do, you might be interested in contacting them Ė it could bring in a decent sum of money for them, if done right.
And if you do, let us know the details so that we can do it too.

Yes.
And if anyone wants to fuss about it, please do it here or here, or make a new thread.

Edit:
OK, the Maser discussion is continued here.
