In my case, I already had the MC version of the TYP, and I applied for the Visa. They turned it down because of too many recent applications and because I had the max credit line with Citi.
I wrote to them and sent along a copy of my equifax credit report, and a copy of the rejection letter and put it in a manila envelope. I don't remember exactly what I wrote, but tell them the following points:
- You really like Thank You points more than any other program, and that you are looking to shift your spending onto that card
- You only actually use a fraction of your total credit line, and the reason you have applied for many cards is only because you like certain benefits about each card
