Its not really a problem to check after the cutoff.

I've ticketed while the flight was boarding I had to have them call in and hold the plane/door for me
(but that was a revenue ticket - lots of revenue ;) )

What I did on Friday was safe IMHO as if the flight would be delayed we'd go back home and the weather was good so there wouldn't be any ground holds to MCI.

I would never fly on such a flight to NYC however as those flights seem to always ground hold issues.
Then again ground holds to NYC are worse from CLE than ZRH...in sum, I'm not sure.

thanks.  There are alternatives but for a lot more money or of course leave after shabb (but parents and in laws would like us home) that flights 1095 the direct el al is 1428

I once did...didn't end up too good (slept in JFK on Shabbos).  Will never do it again.

And it's reasons like that I wouldn't risk it.
Though I would be fine spending a Shabbos at JFK, I feel it's part of honoring the Shabbos by not putting yourself in such situations to begin with. As a whole I am not a big fan of travel on Friday. But coming in internationally like that. It's not worth it. Chances are you'd be totally fine, but still.

Trust me, you wouldn't of liked to spend Shabbos in JFK the way I did...after spending 16 hours stuck in an airplane from mxp-jfk.  Craziest experience of my life.
