Trip To Greece - Phone Recco?
« on: June 25, 2012, 11:59:24 AM »
Going to Greece next week and wondering what the best way is to make select calls to Greece and also keep in touch with folks at home (US)

I could take my Incredible 2 (though it's rooted and GSM may not work) or my wife's iPhone 4S (believe it has CDMA/GSM chipset). I could:

1. Only use the phone when I'm on a wifi network (at a hotel) and make calls using Google Voice with workaround apps like Mobile VOIP/Groove/SIPgate
2. Buy a pre-paid SIM card when I get to Greece and use it for local calls / data, as needed (and when on data use a workaround setup)
3. Buy a pre-paid Verizon International plan and do the same as #2

Thoughts?

Each option cost more and is more convenient than the one before it. Up to you how much you're willing to spend.

Can you elaborate? I didn't have a figure in mind, but I would prefer to spend as little as possible, while having some flexibility to make/receive calls, as needed.

Option 3 is most convenient, and cost most.
Option 1 is the least convenient and the cheapest
Option 2 is in between option 1 and 3

I personally would do either option 2 or 3 depending how long the stay.

Just depends how much you're willing to pay.

Thanks for the information. Will be there for 9 days, so maybe Option 3 is the way to go.
