What do I do with a Citi AA card I don't want anymore?
« on: June 26, 2012, 02:14:34 PM »
The fee is about to hit and I'd like to churn the AA in 18 months or so, but Citi won't let me downgrade to anything except an AA Bronze card.

What should I do? Card has a $9,000 limit

Retention bonus and keep it open.

Won't that prevent me from churning AA in 18 months? I thought you needed to get rid of your AA cards before you can churn again

You can have as many open aa cards as you want, if you want to go with the 18 month rule it starts from when you first got the card.

So if I downgraded to AA Bronze would that reset my timer?

Unsure, but why chance it?

Good point. Just call them up and say I'm thinking of canceling because of the fee, and is there any kind of retention bonus they can offer me? Or do I need to be more subtle

That should work.

I take it it's still a good idea to close existing AA cards, no?

So if you were me, you'd close the card? Since they won't let me downgrade to anything non-AA.

I don't think it really makes a difference, my wife currently has 3 or 4 open. We never bothered closing them and get a retention bonus every year.

No, not religiously. I'm due for a churn now as it's been over 2 years.

Thanks. I'm starting to plan a little AOR to do soon, we'll see how it turns out.

When you reapply they don't see you have current AA cards and deny you on those grounds?

Do you mind telling how much you send per year on each?

They might waive the annual fee even with no spend...

Would closing my AA help my chances for my Citi 2BM I'm planning?
