UA close-in booking fee questions
« on: June 27, 2012, 08:00:57 AM »
Hi all,

I put two award tickets on hold from my wife's UA account, for travel within 21 days. Since she has UA Gold status, the close-in fee is only $25, instead of $75. However, since I have a bunch of miles in my own account (which has UA Dirt status), I would like to split the reservation, and pay for one pax from her account, and and the other from mine. Three questions:

1) If the reservation is held from her account, and only actually ticketed through mine, will the close-in fee still be only $25, since her account is the source of the reservation until the very last minute? Or will it go back to $75 for the one being booked out of my account?

2) If the answer to #1 is that the fee will go up to $75, will it help to "cross-book" - i.e. pay for her ticket with my miles, and my ticket with her miles? I'm thinking this might help since for my ticket, it will have been booked out of an elite account; and for her ticket, the passenger is elite... or does that not make a difference?

3) This applies to all tickets, not just my specific case: if I pay a close-in fee, then change my dates to yet another date within 21 days, will I have to pay the fee again? Or is once enough?

Thanks!

Enlighten me: How does one hold a ticket from one account, but then use miles from another account?

Put on hold online or over the phone, and then call in to change the award number from where the miles are coming.
It's doable on every single airline. Thus, raises a bit a red flag if they are both third parties with no connection at all.

IME:
On AA it works fine (AA metal, and now also BA and the other bookable online).
on DL you'll get an instant error message.
on UA you'll get a message like usual: "thanks for confirming etc...", but you'll wait forever for the E-ticket to come in, and if the account where it was held has enough miles you'll see it deducted from there. (have tried this at least 10 times, until I finally gave up).

Can I use a United Voucher (not a gift card) to pay for change fee and taxes?

Not online. By phone perhaps.

i used vouchers on delta to pay the tax on the phone.

I even got them to waive the phone booking fee, cause i said that its not an option online so why should i be hit with this charge!

Delta has been quite accommodating IME always. Besides the fact that their miles are useless most of the time, once I do book with their miles they are very flexible.
