I booked the tour at Hanoi Backpackers, we stayed in a homestead with  a dozen backpackers, forgot the name, the tours to sapa are usually package deals and cheap.

Did you ever end up planning/taking a trip here?

Am thinking of perhaps doing a couple days in PVG/PEK/ICN/NRT (not sure which yet) and the balance in Vietnam.

I'm dying to do some caving while there...

A quieter bay close to Halong Bay, 2 days, 1 night in boat.
Sapa: 2 nights in train, 2 nights there.
Hoi An: Few nights including a shabbos
Hanoi: First shabbos, our base btw travels

All subject to chg of course.

Keep in mind I'm going w/ kids, so we're somewhat limited w/ the types of activities.
And I don't think the the suites in the train are on the same level as SQ suites, but on the plus side, they're a bit cheaper. :)

From what I've read, it's a much diff experience.
Much more third-wordly than places like Thailand, let alone your other options. And more so the north than the south.
Probably depends on what you're looking to do.
