Dunno.
Thinking about a 2015 trip, and have heard good things about Vietnam, and we enjoyed Bali, so maybe a combo.
Wanna get in one last trip b/f the AA deval.

How would you compare it to other options in the Far East.

So I've got a ticket on hold to SGN, but I was just convinced to do HAN instead.
Anyone been to the Chabad in Hanoi? How about their restaurant or just pick up kosher food while there?

I have been to Vietnam to both SGN & HAN, HAN is WAY more nicer then SGN,  SGN is if your a Vietnam war History buff then SGN is for you, HAN is  near Halong Bay which has AMAZING scenery, also  try to go to Hoi An also a very beautiful city way more nicer then SGN and you can also make custom made suits and shirts in Hoi An cheaper then Thailand. if you have questions about Vietnam and surrounding countries would be more then glad to give you advice.

I was there right before chabad HAN opened up.

Perfect.
I also want to chk out the amazing cave system that was recently opened close to HAN, and I was recommened the lantern city (Hoi An) as well.

Here is the email I got from a friend w/ a short list of northern activities.
"These are the spots we loved in the northern half of country-

Hanoi (nice for a day- your hub)

Hoi An- Lantern city (specialize in tailors- could be nice for shabbat)
-I believe there are resorts and beach towns right near here where you fly into
Dong Hoi- (farms/rice paddies and cave system)
Halong Bay/Bai tu Long Bay- boat trip through the karsts)

And then there are mountain towns that are supposed to have epic hiking north of hanoi...."

And I heard about the tailoring. I'm not a suit kinda guy, but maybe s/t for the kids.

Flight from to HAN are only around $80 RT.

Your list is perfect, you can go on these over night trips outside of HAN and go on these rice paddy field treks near the border of china and the scenery is EPIC

Also halong bay has over night boats which has sleeping cabins, so you can view sunset and sun rise I highly reccomend this.

$80 from / to HAN from where?  You can fly in or out HAN to most major cities in Asia.

The airport next to Hoi An.
Thx for your advice. I'm happy I switched to HAN instead of SGN at the last moment.

So I've been in communication w/ the travel agency that a friend recommended, Eco Friendly Vietnam.

Here's a proposed trip they sent me. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.
(The Ho Chi Minh part of the trip wont happen since we're leaving beforehand)

Personally, I'd love to hit up the caves, but unsure how to work it into the trip.
I'd also rather spend the second shabbos in Hanoi so I can replenish kosher food and then hit up Hoi An for Sunday/Monday b/f returning to HAN for my return flight on Tuesday.

From the details you mentioned, there are some points we want to tell you before you can make decision:
- It is difficult to include Dong Hoi if you only have 2 weeks. It is not very convenient for the transportation to get there for a day.
- There only 1 crop per year for high mountain areas like Sapa, Bac Ha (near border with China) so there will be no rice in those areas at that time. The price terraces are still beautiful anyway. There are 2 or 3 crops per year for lower areas.

The itinerary can be:

Friday: Hanoi arrival
Saturday: Hanoi
Sunday: Ha Long bay - overnight on boat (the quiet part is Lan Ha bay). Please click here to see some options: http://ecofriendlyvietnam.com/?f=Tour&p=61&l=2
Monday: Ha Long bay - overnight in Tam Coc. Please click here: http://ecofriendlyvietnam.com/?f=Tour&p=91&l=2
Tuesday: Visit sites in Ninh Binh - take night train from Hanoi to Sapa
Wednesday: Sapa trekking - overnight at homestay or hotel. Please click here: http://ecofriendlyvietnam.com/?f=Tour&p=60&l=2
Thursday: Sapa trekking - take night train back to Hanoi
Friday: take morning flight to Danang - overnight in Hoi An
Saturday: Hoi An
Sunday: Take day trip to My Son and Hoi An biking.  Please click here: http://ecofriendlyvietnam.com/?f=Content&id=260&p=57
Monday: Take day trip to Hue - take flight to HCM in the late afternoon
Tuesday: Take day trip to visit Cu Chi tunnels + HCM city tour. Please click here: http://ecofriendlyvietnam.com/?f=Tour&p=59&id=334
Wednesday: Mekong tour - overnight at homestay or hotel. Please click here: http://ecofriendlyvietnam.com/?f=Tour&p=89&id=292
Thursday: Mekong - HCM and take flight back

And...?
Would you recommend any changes? I asked about the Cuc Phuong National Park, but there isn't enough time.
If I can do the caves or Sapa, which would you pick?
Where did you stay in Sapa?
