You don't even need to apply and rely on an SM (even though noone has been shot down that way to date), you can even ask via SM before applying if they will waive the annual fee once you apply as you heard there is an offer like that.

And you also help support this site that way by using the DD link ;)

They are free in every UA airport club/lounge. People on FT post them and  give them out for free all the time. Armadillo, not everything is about money.
