AT&T UNIVERSAL CARD
« on: February 16, 2010, 10:18:48 PM »
I just got a letter from AT&T UNIVERSAL CARD FROM CITIBANK (one of my oldest accounts), that says that effective april 1st, they will be charging a $60 annual fee.

I don't usually use the card but it would suck to have to close it because, as I said, its one of my oldest accounts and that will lower my average credit history...

the only way to get out of it, it says in the letter, if i make $2400 of purchases on the card per year, which i would much rather do on my starwood card.

anyone know a way around this?

Citi will let you switch it to a different card type and you'll retain the card history.
Hilton HHonors has no fee if you want and gives free VIP status even though HHonors is a crappy program.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

does that citibank switcheroo even work from one credit issuer (MC) to another (AMEX)?

Yes, I recently switched from AA AMEX to HHonors MC.

Dan you are the man.

Now that you said that, and based on you reply to queensdeals let me take this a step further:

Would I be able to switch my AT&T Universal into HHonors and from HHonors into AA?
Because I recently tried to merge the AT&T with AA and was told that those two products cannot be combined...

Dan, I just called (twice), and both times they told me that this card cannot be switched to another product...
Is there any "department" that I have to talk to in order to be able to do it? Or what else can I do?
Please help!

Did you try escalating to a manager?
Do you have another citi card to transfer the credit limit to?

One time was a regular rep. and another time it was a manager.
I do have another citi card, but the point is to keep this one open as it is an old acct...
(In any case, as I wrote above, they don't even let me transfer the credit limit into my other citi card which is AA. They say that Universalcard and AA are two citi product that cannot be combined).
Any ideas?

OK, I escalated the call when calling my AA card, as well as when calling my AT&T Universal.
Talked to senior supervisors there...
Both times was told that consolidating or switching to a different card has been discontinued around 6 months ago...
Any ideas??
