This whole discussion has the mistaken assumption that leasing is a good deal.... ;)

Can you explain how its not?

One approach is that a car does a disproportionate amount of depreciation during its first 2-3 years.

It's a compelling argument and not one I can see being addressed.

Assuming a new car lasts for 10 years, the comparable cost of this lease is 255*120= $28,600. Assuming you can get a new car for 35,000 (fully loaded) & sell it for 5,00 after 10 years, it's still cheaper. And that's before factoring in the financing element, & that u have a new car every 18 months.

This is the infiniti original offer

http://www.infinitiusa.com/current-offers/?vehicle=g_sedan

idk if these guys are Jewish or not but seems similar

http://www.kingsinfiniti.com/specials/index.htm

The idea is the 2014 redesigned model is coming out in mid/late 2013 so they want to get rid of these, while making sure they guys who buy now will have the option of buying the 2014 model beginning of 2014
Very interesting. Thank you.

So the dealers are getting it for $150 less than Infinity will lease it to me?

It's pretty universally accepted that leasing isn't a financially wise move. It's main advantages are getting a late model car and updating it every 2 years, and not having to deal with maintenance issues.

It's obvious disadvantages without going into a full blown financial analysis is that you are paying money and not building any equity. If you pay $300 a month for 18 months, + $1,500 at signing, you've spent practically $7,000 for 1 1/2 years. Go get a new car for another 18 months etc, you've paid $14K for 3 years. $35K after 8 years. And at the end of all that you own nothing!

If however you buy a Brand new car for $35K, you are not limited on mileage use, and after 8 years you own the car which now has say 80K miles (to be comparable to leased), it's KBB is approx $12,000.

Leasing -After 8 years spent $35K - left with nothing.
Buying - After 8 years spent $35K, left with a car worth $12K.

Of course it's fun to have a new car every 18 months, but know that it costs you $1,500 extra a year (12K/8 years).

Nice summary

Although i think most people will continue to lease cars  ::)

Don't forget to consider how much additional maintenance and repairs you potentially spend on a car for another 6-7 years outside of warranty.  You likely hit some more costly maintenance intervals whereas a lease is pretty much just oil changes.  Now I agree I think you still come out ahead in your scenario but you assume some risk that you may not.

I happen to believe in buying and not leasing, but I always find it funny when people make these comparisons and then use inflated numbers on one side of the equasion. People are not paying $300/month, they are paying $229.

Also, bank fee + dmv is not $1500... they're mayyybe $1000 (and even that's high). Also, MarkS' calculation count the initial payment twice.

So instead of $7,000 for 18 months, you're more realistically looking at $5100.

That said, the point is basically the same, just not as jarring.

Can't the bank fee be waived by paying all upfront? Then its 239*18, which makes $4302+ DMV.

AFAIK, bank fee and paying up front are unrelated.

My Hyundai Sonata that I bought used has a 5 year 60K Bumper to bumper warranty. Bought new there's a 10 yr 100K warranty! Plus, the way cars are built these days, there's not much maintenance in the first 8 years anyway.

Even if they aren't a current Infinity owner? And after tax? A lot of these numbers thrown around here in the low $200's aren't the final numbers.

Yeah, but your 35k number is also pre tax, no?
