Hope I'm wrong, but from my experience, using SPG points in BOB is never a great value...

That's my assumption as well.  Probably can sell the points and pay for the S. Regis and still have change.

Yup. SPG50, SPG355N and similar often give good deals.

On the other hand, some people don't sell their points so if you have enough of them, why not.

And while youre going to BOB, it may be well worth looking at other hotels besides the chains.

Though many have a hard time wrapping their head around spending $800-$1000+/night.

I used 75k miles AA from JFK to PPT, this is in coach. I booked two tickets for me and my wife.
I used the SPG50 to book an OTW bungalow at the La Meridan, luckily the prices were very decent.

How much was the SPG50 rate? How much more was the rate at the S. Regis?
Was the SPG50 cheaper than the SPG AMEX 5 for 4 rate with $100 resort credit?

Yes the SPG50 was way cheaper then any other offer around.
The only big expense was the flight from ppt to bob which was $400 each. There is no way around that :(

I believe that as a Gold you can choose free internet as an amenity. This is a benefit that began this past March. See here: http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/account/member_benefits/gold_preferred.html

Have a Plat book the rate and add you as a guest and then you'll get free internet, suite upgrades, and more.  PM me if you want.

Wouldn't be able to pull it off in MLE. I'd bet its almost impossible in BOB as well (and definitely impossible if there are island transfers like in MLE).

In the past, I've checked in others on my Plat account and explicitly called the hotel in advance to let them know that I was adding a name of another guest for whom I was booking the room. In all the cases, they had no issue with this. in one case, the rep thought it was very gracious of me to be treating out a friend/colleague in the way.
