I'm not disagreeing with your sentiment, I'm just saying that you could use the cash back just as easily to repair the leak in your roof as you can on a vacation. What you actually choose to use it for is irrelevant, it's a cash back card just like any other, just book a refundable.
My point isn't what I'm using it for. It may be a cash back card, but it's not part of my paycheck/budget. I hear your point, I think we pretty much agree. My main focus with points and miles, it to not pull cash out of my pocket. Stopping potential extra cash from coming in is ok.
Memories last forever, make them while you can.

My point still stands. What they are saying is only true to a certain degree.

Same can be said for miles.
Not even close. At least not until they start caring about refundables.

No. I need to make x amount to live, and anything more than that, will go towards luxuries/retirement/investment etc. I can't afford to take money out of what I NEED, for what I WANT, but this isn't money I need, it's out of budget. 11/12 months, it goes to savings/investments, but once a year or so, it goes towards a luxury that I may not have been able to afford otherwise. I completely agree, cash is cash. I had an opportunity to replace my car with a nicer (fully loaded) car, for the same price, or get the same one (newer model) for cheaper. A bad decision (assuming you live paycheck to paycheck) is to get the nicer car. I opted not to, and saved the $, even though my budget allowed it.

Your average Joe (not me) can sell his miles pretty easily.

Point is, for a lot of us (with limited spending resources) miles act as a CD to save up towards travel costs we would otherwise be hesitant to cover out of pocket. In doing that, we willingly forgo the opportunity to earn cashback. A+ is the same thing in a different format.

And your average Joe will get a Dear John letter from Barto and his ilk pretty soon after that. It's silly to compare the 2 situations IMHO.

What you're describing is decreasing marginal utility. Why distinguish between the source of the extra money for luxuries/retirement/investment?

I'm not! My point is merely that this is extra income, thus making it easier to justify spending on extra stuff. If I win $100 on a scratch off, I'd use it the same way. Any irregular surges in income, are treated the same by me.

Wow, I really liked this video. But the sad/scary part is, if I really viewed my miles or A+ as fungible and as money that has just come into my bank account, I wouldn't go on any trips.

I do not believe there is a minyan /kosher food /or any Jews in either location.
People go there to get away.
I don't think one place over the other would be easier for shabbos
