if you buy a $1000 item and then return that item, do you still get the 1000 points?

But does that apply to business cards?

Even if it's a different business?

Does amex give you the full 6 months to spend to get the new card signup bonus or is it 180 days?

If you spend 30k how long does it take for gold status to take affect and how long does the status remain?

Thanks
If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

I guess I found my answer:

"If during any calendar year, Eligible Purchases on your Card account are $30,000 or more, you (the Basic Card Member) will be enrolled for at least twelve months in the Gold Preferred level of the Starwood Preferred Guest® loyalty program"
If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

And if it's 30K in unbonused spend?
Admittedly, even that isn't a surefire bet with the SPG card anymore these days.  Too many easy ways to turn unbonused spend into bonused (Amex BB+ and the Ink series come to mind).

But... A3 and JAL are lucrative partners, and only with SPG.

what I mean is. Don't spend 30k on SPG just to get gold status. Sign up for a plat card and get it for free.

Already spent and since it comes I wanted to know.
Plat card has the fee which for the life of me I can't come to terms with regardless of the airline credit and lounge access, I don't really fly that often.
If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

Have you checked out other status possibilities with that level of spend? Jetblue Mosaic @ $50K, Marriott Platinum (and with it SPG and United Silver) @ $75K  come to mind.

How else do you want him to get SPG points?
