If one SPG Amex card gives you 5 nights and 2 stays can you get 10 SPG Amex cards and automatically recieve Platinum status for having 50 nights? Anyone try that?
yes
they don't let you combine any other person's bonus nights. Not even your wife's. (I know, I've tried)  The only thing that you can combine/transfer is the SPG points and the 5K referral points.
its a new thing

yesits a new thing
so with the new rules in place, taking out 10 cards is the immediate way to platinum. Can anyone confirm that?
I am not 100% sure about this. But I am going to click it anyway.

Trying to get spg gold via spending 30k per year. Does anyone know if it goes based on a calender year or the credit card anniversary year? If calender,  do they measure through 12/31 or through the December or January statement date?

It says here that they $30K is to be spent within the calendar year: http://www.dansdeals.com/archives/58125
Also, you can become SPG Gold by having an Amex platinum or by having 10 stays. The 10 stays definitely go by calendar year.

So does that mean 12/31 even though my statement does not end them? Seems odd

Their whole system runs by calendar year, it seems. Definitely their annual stays for Gold and Platinum status. Those statuses are good for the whole year, plus the following Jan & Feb.
(For the $30K spending part, I quoted Dan's article, but there could possibly be a 2-week leeway if that's how the monthly statements run.... If I was aiming for $30K per year, then I'd call and find out..)

OK, since I am real close, I called Amex, just to make sure. According to CS (yeah, I know, dropr) it is a true calender year 1/1-12/31. Also, he said it was for that year and the next full year, so hopefully, but the time it is reported to amex, it will be 2015, and I will get two full years

- free Wi-Fi + 250 point rebate for every Starwood stay
- 50% bonus points on paid stays
- room upgrades
- 4pm checkout, and more

If you have a platinum card you can upgrade to gold without any spending or stays.

Is the only way to get platinum SPG status is to have 40 stays. What are the benefits of platinum over gold?

Standard platinum info (25 stays) from SPG site:

As a Platinum member, you’ll enjoy all the benefits of Gold status, plus even more rewards:

An upgrade to best available room at check-in — including a Standard Suite.
Complimentary in-room, high-speed Internet access.

Is the 1000 points per check-in only for paid stays?

Most Starwood check-ins have a 1,000 bonus point ammenity (even with a points stay).

I believe that the "Four Points" may have 500 bonus.

You need to have an SPG.com account for the account number that is tied to the credit card. If you just opened a new account online it's not going to show your points balance tied to the credit card since that's a different account.

IME, i just copy my rewards # from my amex account (Right above the total points I earned), then create new account using rewards # (on top right of screen), then it will prompt you to create new account. After 2 days, the points posted on SPG website. This only works if you didn't already accumulate points on your current SPG account.
