So it sounds like you need to close & reopen the amex account then? Doesn't that hurt your credit score with the repeated opening and closing of credit accounts? I see a lot of people saying that the SPG is a generally good spending card, so how does one manage to keep it around as that with all the churn?

Also I don't quite know what VR is but with some basic searching it sounds like it's Vanilla Reload, presumably some sort of prepaid card? Does that mean essentially you buy this prepaid card with the Amex (presumably with some large denomination to maximize SPG points)?

It doesn't hurt your credit if you transfer the CL to a different Amex card before you close it. Closing  aCC without loosing the CL DOES NOT HURT YOUR CREDIT.
