I think you may be underestimating the value of 25k SPG bonus points.
remember, for every 20K you transfer you get an extra 5. Transferring 60K would get you 75K... But yes IMO overrated.

Not at all. I actually use it for my day-to-day spending. It was just a random thought.

I know this must have been chewed over many times over here, but I can't seem to get a clear picture.

1) I applied for a new spg card after only recently canceling my last one. I left the spg number box blank on the app. I got the card with a new spg number. I thought things were looking good and I would receive another 25k bonus. When I logged onto my old spg account something was wrong and over the phone they notified me that they merged my old account with the new one created. Does this mean I won't be getting another signup bonus? Is there a way to tell before I go spend $5k on the card?

2) Dan was talking about the May 1st deadline to get another signup bonus on the same amex card one last time. Does this mean for cards approved after May 1st, And therefore I can still do it again? (as I was approved prior)

TIA

1) Auto-merging of accounts frequently happen like that when you just leave the SPG number blank and the rest of the details of the two SPG accounts are similar (name, address, etc).  If you canceled the SPG card recently (i.e. within the last 12 months) and reapplied, there's a very good chance that you will not receive the bonus.  Your first clue will be whether or not you get the 10k for your first purchase.

2) Nobody knows for sure (the whole crystal ball thing), but the popular opinion is that if you've ever had that consumer card in the past, you will not be able to get a bonus after a May 1 approval.

However, do you think that business SPGs will remain with a 12 month "refresh" and new bonuses?

It is my humble opinion - take that for what it's worth - is that the way Amex business bonuses behave today will be the same they behave on May 1.  Beyond that, who knows??

Thanks for your thorough reply. In regards to point 1 is there a popular opinion in regards to the best way to do it to up your chances? First create a new spg account...?

It can't hurt to open a new SPG but I don't think that's the real factor.

Perhaps the people who know the secret will tell the rest of us on May 1 when the new rules go in to effect.

Thanks. Would you know if there is any way to transfer non-spg amex points to a spg account?
