You could churn each card every 12 months. If you got it at a regular offer, you could get 30K per card. If you got it at the higher offer, you could get 35K per card.
Once upon a time there was no 12 month rule either...
Even then, when it clearly has a larger value, how do people justify spending $400 on GC's to stay 1 night at a fancy hotel. $400 on GC's could be used to hit spend bonuses and gain hundreds of thousands of points in different currencies. I just don't get it.
There are only so much cards and inquiries one can have, you know...

Eh... I don't think I'll ever be convinced. GC's and WM are too much work (esp. for an NYCer) just to get a $1-1point exchange.

Let's put it this way:
If a trip to Walmart isn't getting me a trip to Hawaii, I'm don't want to go.

Miles don't grow on trees.... They grow in WM money centers.

Are you a gold member that might help for an upgrade .
Try asking for the rack rate and you could redeem 1k starpoints for 50% the rack rate.
Or there's a AAA rate on the Starwood site

Thanks, they said the rack rate is not available for my nights.

Does it make sense that the hotel employee needs my starwood password to book a hotel with points?

They need your verbal password but can usually help if you don't remember it. You can also set it up online before calling them.

my spg account says 6 stays ytd / 15 nights ytd   I've never stayed at an SPG property since becoming a member aside pesach program which don't coun't so I assume this is standard for all cardholders...my question is what does it mean for me? anything? if I don't add to it it's worthless?

You must have combined a few accounts. Every time you open a card they give you 2 stays / 5 nights. It's good towards status but you should be able to get gold without it

if you earn 4 more stays by Dec. 31, it's worth it to be a gold status member for the entire year 2015 plus through Feb 2016.

You get late 4:00 check out, bonus points upon check-in, and jr. upgrades if available, etc..
