I'm both + much much more.
I didn't demonize the profession, I just said that one of two the dentist's I met was either incompetent or corrupt.

I understand that there are more and less aggressive treaters, but to go from 5 fillings to zero is pretty amazing imho.

That comment was directed at ExGini.

If you have 5 of the same lesions and 1 dentist would fill and the other wouldn't, not so amazing IMPO

Which category do you fall into ?! 😉

It's really patient specific. If the patient generally has good oral hygiene, I may trust them to use flouride treatment to remineralize the lesion. If their mouth is a wreck I would probably fill them so they don't progress.

Guilty as accused!

Unfortunately, my statements were based on personal experience. I know it's not scientific, but I've been to several dentists in my lifetime (myself, my wife and my children) and only found 2 honest ones. I am sure there are many others, but I put dentists and car mechanics in a similar category. They can tell me anything, and I, the layman, must trust them. That's why honesty is the number 1 trait that I look for in those two professions.

Any service provider that you're not an expert in that field, you'd need to take their word for what they say.

I'd rather do that with my car or house than body.

I know something about electricity and lighting. I can see burned out wires, disconnected wires, short circuits, etc.

I CANNOT read an x-ray or see inside my mouth.

I don't know too much about car mechanics (especially in today's day and age) but could understand if explained to me.

You don't clean your mouth and bacteria are eating your teeth. There is now a big hole where there shouldn't be.

Consider yourself explained to

You weren't paying attention. I lumped dentist and car mechanics together.

It is not about understanding, it's about needing to trust someone to read the x-ray and see in my mouth.

No matter what I am told, I need to trust the professional. That professional can, if unethical, tell me anything, and I will have to trust. I will further need to trust for the procedure and work done, as I am unable to witness the work.

Unfortunately my experience has been negative. I have one pediatric dentist and one regular dentist that I trust. They have earned it after bad experiences with others.

I can only talk by personal experience, which I have detailed above.

When the dentists I trust are no longer practicing, I will have to find someone else ,and will go by recommendation only.

No.

While Medicaid in NY is a Rolls Royce medical insurance (buying similar coverage with no deductible and co-pays would easily exceed $1,200 per individual) when it comes to dental, it's really a poor man's plan. If you're an adult they don't pay for crowns or anything of the sort, they will pay for an extraction!

Sometimes they will make an exception for front teeth

Whoa! You wanna post that on "interesting articles," or should I?

I'm curious to hear dentists weigh on on this!

But it doesn't really make sense - how can you have rotting food stuck between your teeth and have it not be bad for your teeth and gums?
