You don't need to have the card with you to get free bags!!

A few hours after you are approved for the card, it should show on your DL profile that you are a card holder.

I did this on my delta flight, although I never checked any luggage, I said I was at online check in and it was free.

is that PGGM'able?
good way to manufacture that credit?

Yes. There's a thread about it somewhere. Basically don't cancel straight away, wait like 22 hours.

if i booked a delta glitch ticket with a different card, would i still get free luggage if i apply for the delta gold card? would i get free luggage if someone made me an AU on his card?

I can only answer the first question with certainty, but yes. I booked on one card and then showed my delta card (which I had closed down, but the expiration date hadn't passed) and got the free luggage.

What's the best (fastest) way to do this considering all the changes and rules for transfer times, crediting times, bonus amounts, and min spend thresholds? AMEX, SPG, Delta cards, etc.

I've been searching and digging in the forums for hours and I'm all turned around and lost.

Hold out hope that the seats you need will still be there in a 4-6 weeks' time when you finally get the points. Try to find an offer for an AMEX card that comes with 100K (not sure how you do that but ask around) and then go for a regular DL to get the last 25K.
