PRICING MISTAKE: 4 miles from Hong Kong

I know someone who called United about one of his 5 tickets that deducted miles for one passenger (2 passenger itinerary), the eticket receipt said it costed 8 miles but the full price of one passenger was deducted from his account. After one perplexed agent transferred him to a supervisor he was told to call back tomorrow and told that all such tickets will be voided as it makes no sense for such a ticket to only be 8 miles.

Otherwise, I'm happy I got myslef 3 JFK-HKG roundtrips in FN but regret I didn't take advantage of this more, maybe an Israel trip? Oh well!
On the one hand, I expect United to honor these but on the other hand I'm not holding my breath! I guess we'll just wait and see!

"Totally does not make sense?" I think it makes some sense! More then honoring $15 Million worth of bogus fares. And I don't think too many people out there would rather lose all of it then go economy. I know I wouldn't.

And it really makes no sense for United to honor a guy's 50 tickets which probably has a market value close to half a million dollars.

You'll just have to take my word for it (I know there are a lot of skeptics in this thread, and rightfully so) but I have a friend who works at United who told me this morning that they are WELL aware of the error and aren't very happy about it.

Latest info I have from him is the airline is looking into whether the fact that the correct price was displayed above the line is grounds for canceling all of these tickets.

FWIW - I have 3 booked.

Baruch shekivanti...that was my assumption...they'd harp on the fact that the top line said the correct price. Time will tell...is there a precedent out there?

The DoT reg is new. Only time it was used was for the KE rev price mistake.

FWIW though my original email said the full amount but a total of 4 mile, the 2nd email of the confirmed ticket made no mention of the original full amount.

Do DoT regs govern US based airline even if the flights in question are not to/from the US?

Imagine the same argument if the 4 miles was really 50,000. Would this argument really hold water? 4 miles shouldn't be any different.

I believe so as where the plane is registered determines the laws regarding the flight IIRC ex: an Israeli general wanted for terror in the UK is safe so long as he doesn't step off the Elal plane.

Would the fact that some of the flights are on partners allow UA to cancel?

after reading the dot regulations think about if united can cancel the other parts of your ticket and letting you only with the parts coming and going from the us
assuming going to hkg and then to tlv and back they can cancel the hkg tlv part

That's regarding laws aboard the plane, and AFAIK laws of the country where it took off from apply.

found this on a website this guy flew out yesterday

The full amount has been deducted for two of his three first class tickets to Bangkok via Frankfurt and Hong Kong using UA, Lufthansa, and Thai.  He does not have enough to cover the third.  A new receipt was emailed with the correct pricing. He is waiting for word from UA before making any changes or calling them with any questions.
